It's no secret that Koreans are a narrow-minded lot when it comes to foriegners, and they seem to distrust all of us to some extent, but why do they seem so especially afraid of black people? I wonder if or how the American military presence plays into this. Is it that the overall portrayal of African-Americans in Hollywood films has not generally been too flattering (though I daresay the fear predates film)? Simply a case of an isolated population? Did Botswana and Korea fight a war of which I'm not aware?

I'm stumped. Please share your theories...

It's not just negro people, they dislike anybody that is different. They show discrimination against other Koreans that may be different than what is considered the mainstream. Koreans are the most racist prats on the planet. Smile

They have larger johnsons and therefore are jealous.

Korea is still behind the times but are changing rapidly. In the Valleys back home if you were to see a black man in the middle of nowhere you would ask them if they are lost (Actually only if you were a farmer maybe).

In Hong Kong about 7 years ago we had a toothpaste called Darkie with the picture of a black man on it. Then they changed it to Darlie. I didnt know why at the time but then realised it a few years later.

I think Korea has no tack and it's good in some ways because they say what they mean and you can sometimes know where you stand.

But i think that black people have had less to do in Asia than white men. But I could be completly wrong.

I was told when I first came here - by a Korean bloke no less - that Korean men were jealous of white men's equipment. "Wow," I thought, "this is great. I've never been a threat to anyone's masculinity before." Now I can take out my few modest inches at parties, lay it on the table, and say, "mine, all mine."

Seriously, though...I think I might be searching for a rational answer to what is obviously an irrational problem. I asked my girl about this and she, a fairly open-minded Korean lass, admitted to being nervous around black guys but also that she had no reason to be.

What I'm getting at is: When my woman fails me, I turn to those of you at Dave's. Wink

The Koreans I've asked all cited the image of the scary black criminal in Hollywood movies. Fair enough, Hollywood has a lot to answer for. But come on, surely they're hip enough to know that they shouldn't get their entire perspective on and entire race from the movies!

Hi Everyone,

I can only talk about my experience in Korea...so I guess don't take my word for it.

I was in Korea in 2002 as an exchange student. I was treated well. I don't look like someone out of a music video or a hollywood movie (I'm short, with short hair, and a woman...I guess that makes me not scary??). People were really nice to me and were very helpful. Honestly, I didn't hear about this problem till I started reading this forum! I was pretty surprised to read about other people's experiences in Korea. Maybe things got worse in the last 2 years or I just hung out with open minded college students and adults...

Well...I guess all I can say is that I had a great time in Korea. If I had a crappy experience there, I wouldn't be planning on going back!

Questions, comments, details...PM me!

There is an ad going around on buses at the moment for a black sesame seed cookie with a black basketballer holding it up... wonder if he understands the concept?? Personally the person in charge of that campaign should be shot.... for unorginality.... its 2004 not 1960

As far as the comments Ive heard about black people in Korea... most koreans think they are all gang bangers and dealers. Mind you the bad element of the african contingent in Itaewon doesnt help

Ok here is my Korean friends two cents worth. She says that she fears black people simply because of the way they look. The contrast between black and white on their bodies, teethm eyes, palms of their hands.....

She said it kinda makes them look not human.

I have heard this from a few Koreans I know. Maybe all don't think that way but a couple obviously do.

All right, I just have to add what my students told me. They said they were afraid of Africans because they ate other people. Then they went on to say that's what their teacher at school taught them. Shocked Rolling Eyes Somewhere they'd seen pictures of cannibals and were taught that black people are like this.

The better question might be: why do black people hate Koreans?

"Twenty D Energizers."
"Twenty, C Energizer?"
"D, not C, D."
"B Energizer?"
"D *beep*, D! Learn to speak english first, alright? D!"
"How many you say?"
"Twenty, *beep*, twenty."
"Honey..."
"Mother-*beep* you!"

[Ice Cube]
Everytime I wanna go get a fuckin brew
I gotta go down to the store with the two
oriental one-penny countin *beep*
that make a nigga made enough to cause a little ruckus
Thinkin every brother in the world's out to take
So they watch every damn move that I make
They hope I don't pull out a gat and try to rob
they funky little store, but bitch, I got a job
("Look you little Chinese *beep*
I ain't tryin to steal none of yo' shit, leave me alone!"
"Mother-*beep* you!")
Yo yo, check it out
So don't follow me, up and down your market
Or your little chop suey ass'll be a target
of the nationwide boycott
Juice with the people, that's what the boy got
So pay respect to the black fist
or we'll burn your store, right down to a crisp
And then we'll see ya!
Cause you can't turn the ghetto - into Black Korea

"I do *beep* you!"

um...ok?

This goes to another thread in off-topic forum over whether hip hop has impacted on the perception of Blacks....

I can only speak for myself in saying, I have no desire to burn someone's store down or something. But to be fair, you know how rude ajosshis and ajummas can be in Korea...now imagine them, the way they usually act, with unhappy people (of any race), and you will get a combustable situation.

I heard about the Korean stores being burned down in L.A. But it's news to me for the most part. I'm from the wrong coast and way too young to be penalized for the actions of pissed off people in California.

Another question: Why do so many Koreans listen to hip-hop music in nightclubs and wear "gangsta" clothing with Afros or dreadlocks? I find it interesting when the listen to this music without understanding the hateful anti-Asian words they are hearing.
