I feel that while my time in Korea has come to an end, I have one more year in Asia left in me. I would like to spend that last year teaching in China. I was wondering if anyone that has gone through the Korea to China transition could give me any advice on things to look for in the schools there, what they had wish they had known, how easy/difficult getting over there was, city they recommend and the like. Thanks a bunch!

There's a thread or two floating around somewhere on this forum if you run a search. If I find it, I'll post it.

But I'd check the job-related China forum on Dave's international forums and check out the thread on the new tax in effect there now.

You could also consider Taiwan.

I'd imagine that while the salary, perks and teaching might be comparable, the quality of life might not be. From what I've heard, China has a lot of the little "quirks" that Korea has but amplified greatly.

You might want to consider that before moving there. The gap between the two countries might be bigger than your home country and Korea.

I'm not trying to discourage you. Just food for thought!

I came here from Taiwan. They have the same language as China, but easier visa hurdles and if shit hits the fan it is way easy to drop your visa and switch in Taiwan than China from what i have heard. Just something to think about. PM if you would like to know more.

In Korea I started making more than double what I currently make in China, but after the currency went to s**t, I was making significantly less each month. Still, my salary when I left Korea was higher than it is now. But the cost of living in China (excluding Beijing and Shanghai) is phenomenally low. In Hefei a man can get by on a couple of dollars a week. Its possible to save a thousand dollars a month on a reasonable salary.

This guy seems like an idiot. He couldn't handle Korea and thought that since he liked his honeymoon period in China (having only been there for three months) it meant that China > Korea in every way.

Some things are better in China, sure but a lot of things are worse too.
