| so at work today, my boss randomly asked me for my arc and passport. She mentioned something about the ministry of education. Why would she ask about this. She was being a little evasive when I asked why. She did mention MOE people coming to visit the school and how she forgot to register me. Anyone have any insight? |

So make copies of them and give the copies to her.
(passport information page, ARC (front and back)).
She does NOT need the originals.

| She forgot to register you? Doubtful. I'm wondering what other things she "forgot" to do, such as enroll you in the national health plan, the national pension plan, and forward taxes deducted from your salary to the tax office. |

| The MOE has been requesting information recently... my boss just needed my health check though... it might be that she "forgot" to enroll you so she could just steal your deducted taxes and health pay, and now that MOE is doing roll call, has to get her stuff in order... sketchy and no reason to give the originals... |

She has paid my insurance premiums because I was at the hospital yesterday to get some medication for a particularly virulent case of the flu. |

Here's the deal.
When you come to Korea, Immigration requires that you register with them if you stay in Korea beyond 90 days. This is why you always hear that you have 90 days to register with Immigration and get your ARC. To be able to register with Immigration to work in Korea and stay beyond 90 days you need a special visa that authorizes you to work, of which there are many. Most teachers come here on the E2 visa. This only gets you in the door and allows you to stay. It does not allow you to teach.
To legally be a teacher in Korea you need to be registered with the MOE (Ministry of Education) at your local Education Office - Koreans and Foreigners need to do this. The rule at the Education Office is that you have to register with a copy of your ARC and passport within 2 weeks of your first day at your school.
So, in reality, you have only 2 weeks from your arrival to get your Health Check, apply for and receive your ARC.
They may also need a copy of your diploma. They used to require copies of your transcripts, but no longer.
New rules being slowly introduced starting this year also require apostilled background checks, apostilled diploma copies and perhaps health checks to be filed with the local Education Office. These are not being introduced at the same speed in every area, but they will all get around to it eventually - it may take a year or two, but they will. Don't worry if you haven't heard. Just wait until you do. If Immigration has your originals, the Education Office should accept photocopies - even if some recruiter or school tells you differently.
So, your boss has to take your ARC and passport to the local Education Office. Some of them want to see the originals, but they keep photocopies on file. Others will accept copies without seeing the originals.
It is possible that your boss forgot this rule, forgetting is human and there are so many rules in life, people do forget things.
You need your ARC to be registered for Health Insurance, Pension and with the Tax Office and it's convenient for opening bank accounts as well, so getting it quickly is important. Too many teachers and/or schools don't handle this properly. It's good to hear your boss took care of these things.
In any case, your boss's request is reasonable and required by law. She may only need copies, but since you say you have your Health Insurance, she may be telling you the honest truth about forgetting. Health Insurance and Pension are linked, so likely you're reigstered for both, and these are the things that cost her money.
There is no advantage to her in not registering you with the local Education Office, and there are penalties for failure to do so. She likely did forget. Give your boss a break and accept that she's human. Give her the copies she needs and if she needs the orignals for a day, don't sweat it. If you're really nervous, you could offer to go along and bring your ARC and passport with you to show them. |

I'm in my 2nd year at the same school and just found today about the whole MOE are doing roll call on Hagwons about their foreigner staff. So, today was a deadline or something to register with them and another teacher and I had to rush to Immigration at lunch-time to get the copies of my CBC, degree and medical check.
Also, found out that I wasn't registered with the MOE for my first year haha. |
