Details are still sketchy, but it looks like they're now looking at Neo-Nazis for the shooting.
Any guesses so far?
I'm guessing one lone guy on a crusade. If it's true that he was filming, perhaps he's looking to send out an eventual message.
Anyone following this more closely? |

Assuming this CBC article is up-to-date, the guy is still holed up in his apartment, and the police are possibly blasting their way in. |

Over 30 hours now. Seems the guy is willing to grab a little girl by her pigtails and shoot her in the head, but hasn't got the guts to shoot himself. My my, what a remarkable piece of humanity. I hope to f that the police take him alive. |

He's French Algerian. How come there is no biting commentary about the man's Algerian background and how that influenced his shooting spree? Had the guy been French-Korean, I think this board would be blowing up with people giving their own psycho-analysis.

Officers blew up a vehicle that was blocking access to the area this morning at 8am. |
A tow truck can get that car jacked and moved in under 10 minutes. Hell, i've seen tow truck drivers hook up a car and drive away in under 5 minutes.
I find it hard to believe they actually needed to blow the car up because it was in the way. |

Since you mention it, I think he's quite an interesting case. Actually a kind of stereotypical Islamic extremist. Ordinary Algerian family, quite poor, petty criminal, a bit of a loser, somewhat unhinged, failed to get into the French military, starts getting drawn into extremist ideas to deal with his general rejection in life, ends up in Afghanistan, still a loser, makes his way back to France and goes nutso after a couple of years.
You mention Korean - I'd say he is basically the Virginia Tech murderer + an ideology.
If some good comes of this, then I hope it will blow the whole mystique of the jihadi martyr wide open and show the world what saddies they are, particularly to the young Muslim community. Hope the French police are very careful not to shoot him dead.
These are just thoughts. |

Right. And involving 300 police officers.
A botched operation if ever there was one. Why didn't they gas him?
If it takes that amount of resources to take down just one jihadi, then France is going to have a lot of problems.
oh and his brother is "proud" of him and his mommy refused to help police. |

I got the impression that the mother didn't so much as 'refuse', but rather said she had little to do with her son and that he wouldn't listen to her. |

What 'mystique' are you referring to? He's pretty typical of every other wannabe jihadi who has gone before him, and I'm sure there'll be plenty of other inaqequate young Muslim men wanting to follow in his footsteps. |

So basically french muslims could bring the entire country to its knees if even one out of every 100 of them decided to mount a co-ordinated attack?
Precarious existence. Someone has only to give the word.. and France would be overpowered within days.

The mistique that attracts people to doing such things, obviously. I wouldn't call him a wannabe Jihadi, I'd just call him a Jihadi, ie a horny young paranoid loser with nothing else going on in his life. Same thing. I think this guy illustrates that more than others have, that was my only point. |
