|
|
So the new EPIK form has arrived and they've removed the city preferences. Which were far from guaranteed anyway. Instead there's just an urban/rural and a check box for Seoul consideration. I guess its due to a lot of people applying to Seoul / Busan. Anyway, I want to stay in Daegu but change schools (hagwon atm). Any way around this? Like maybe going through the Daegu education office? I guess I could claim I have my own place so I'd stay in the same city but then I'd have to actually organise my own apartment for next year?[/quote] |

This is a pretty clever way to reduce the number of applications. |

I'm pretty sure this sort of transfer always goes through the MOE rather than EPIK. Talk to the Daegu MOE about it. |

Are they still asking what elementary school you went to? |

What a joke. I was gunning for a rural placement, now even that is completely random. Epik, good day to you, sir. China, here we come.

Chiba? Near Tokyo?
Oh, you fixed it. I'd check the forums for that country to make sure the grass actually is greener there. |

Yah, it's called a typo. Depressingly common in the age of the touchscreen. I suppose/imagine that you are typing away on a full keyboard in the daytime hours in Korea, and not drunkenly ranting about some bs e-mail you just got at the end of a long night.
In all honesty, I will probably just stay put right here in Amerka for a while. If, as you imply, times are tough everywhere, I might as well stay put and remain in control of my destiny. Unless you got some sweet leads for me in Chiba, Japan, that is... |

Well there is no grass there, except the spray-on kind. |

That's fine. I'm not necessarily saying don't go, I'm just suggesting you read the China forum on Dave's international forums. There's a new social security deal you have to pay into and foreigners are apprehensive as to whether or not they'll get that back. And it's a good chunck of your already low salary there.
May be fine, but I'd wait t see how that pans out first. |

It's too bad, really. I've been hemming and hawing about going there for a while now. |

Well, urban usually indicates a city. Try getting the placement you want in the JET Program and see if EPIK really is worse.
But I get your point. There's another thread on this board that talks about applying directly to public schools. |

I wouldn't even consider a program that involved random placement coupled with being responsible for your own housing. Been there, done that, couldn't afford to buy the T-shirt.
With sights set on one not particularly popular province, I was bound to be puzzled and disappointed by this news. However, what particularly chafes is this portion of the e-mail which was sent out:
"Applicants who truly intend to come to Korea to teach and do their best as an educator should ultimately be flexible in terms of their placement."
Aside from the absurdity of this statement, It sounds as if we are being pre-emptively chastised for complaining about this new policy. |

That's just bizarre.
I wonder if this could backfire on them, since it could lead to a lot of last minute pull-outs if people get placed somewhere they don't like the look of. Unless they aren't planning on telling people what city they'll be placed in until they've arrived at the orientation?... |

So apply for GEPIK instead. Or see about applying directly for schools under EPIK. |

Not really. They probably just had too many people back out when they didn't get the location they wanted. So this is their remedy. I doubt they'll have trouble finding applicants. |
