My wife has a contract that finishes April 2nd. The school said they would renew her, but they have yet to have her sign the new contract.

The answer she receives when it asks about it is that people are busy, and they will get to it later.

Do schools commonly take their time when it comes to signing renewal documents?

She was offered a position at a different school. Should she just tell her current school that she is done waiting, and take the other offer? Or will her current school cause problems prohibiting her from taking the other offer?

Discuss the situation with the 2nd school. See what they say.

Unless she signs a new contract with the current school there is nothing they can do after April 2 (when the contract ends.)

I'd make sure the other school is better or at least as good before signing though.

I think the other school is better? If her current school asks her to renew today or on Monday, and she says, "No. You had your chance.", then will her current school give her problems when she goes to sign with the other school?

They can whine and moan and refuse to give a good reference...but that's about it.

I wouldn't be so blunt though...that's likely to inflame emotions. I'd say something like "I'm sorry but I was under the impression that if you'd really wanted to re-hire me you'd have let me know sooner. I needed to know...I couldn't wait until the last day.

If the school said they'd renew her, then they plan to do so. Your wife should voice her concerns to the current school - if they really do plan to renew her, they'll give her a document to sign within days.

Not this last minute!

5 days left and they still haven't asked ? Thats not normal.

Public school principals get bored quickly. They want a new face every year or so. And recruiters will fool them into signing new people every time just to make more money.

Probably about 3 months to go, some recruiter showed the principal a file of blonde 20 year olds. He has no such people on the books but he keeps the principal in thrall until its too late. Then once the old waeguk has not been renewed, then he suddenly says "sorry, we only have person A" (balding, middle-aged serial killer) and the school has to take them.

I am in the same boat right now. My contract expired last week. They rushed me to do medical 2 weeks ago. They've been silent since then. WTF? They did have me sign an "intent to renew" form last month. I am just waiting to see. I have until May on my ARC.

My friend said they wait until the last min. Also, they're probably looking at their budgets etc. She said, Korea is not hiring as much this year, but it also depend where you are and if it's private or public. One of her friends school actually closed down.
