Can I pick up some good quality running shoes at a decent price in Korea? I would prefer an internationally known brand, Adidas, Saucony, Nike, New Balance, ASICS etc.

Any tips on price and where to buy them would be great!

Thanks!

Go to a chain store for whatever brand you want, they're in basically any shopping district.

Thanks northway,
How is the price compared to abroad? I'm in Mexico right now, but heading to Korea in a month with a stop off in Canada. If I can get them cheaper in Canada then I will, but if they are cheaper in Korea then I'll pick some up when I get there.

Cheers!

My husband has been pretty into running over the last year or so. He got really into it when we came to Korea. I'd say the prices in Korea are about on par with Canada when you're buying something regularly priced. We're home in Canada and had expected to get running gear a lot cheaper over here. If you can get it on sale in Canada (at an outlet maybe) then it might be cheaper. We went to the states last week and scored on lots of running stuff. You should be able to find a pretty good selection in Korea. They carry the up to date models from Asics and all the other brands, but if you have big feet you might be best to bring shoes from home.

Probably about the same as Canada, a bit more expensive than the States. I paid around 90,000 for my Aasics, but the store had models ranging from around 60,000 to 120,000. If you're a guy I'd recommend buying in Canada, as size might be an issue in Korea (I'm a 10.5/11 and I have had trouble finding shoes that fit).

ABC Mart has shoes from general brands like Nike, Addidas, etc Those chains are all over. I know Itaewon has one, and there is a new one directly outside of Hyewha station on the light blue line. I usually don't buy in Itaewon, as I can sometimes find deals on last year's models at other Korean stores that can't easily sell the larger sizes. If you're looking for top-notch boutique-style shoes for pros, then good luck. I'm sure they can be found somewhere.

BUY ALL THE SHOES YOU NEED BEFORE YOU COME HERE.

While it is true that Korea has a great selection of most shoes brands, and the prices are more or less the same. Some models are 40-70% more. The Hattori from Saucony is 80 in the states, it is 160 in Korea. Don't even get me started on Vibram Five fingers in Korea.

More troubling is the fact that they will not import all sizes of a model. Or no 1/2 sizes. The reason my Korean GF tells me is that for the longest time Koreans only cared about how a shoe looks and less about how it performs.

I bought the Mizuno wave in the US before I left. The replaced it with the same shoe in Korea. But the Korean shoe feels different. The heel cup and midfoot are stiffer, and overall the shoe feels narrower.

After living here for 5 years, and throwing away good money on bad shoes I have learned buy them when on vacation or have them shipped from American sites.

Good luck on your hunt.

It's funny that you mention this. Some friends and I were hiking Seoraksan this weekend and every ajumma kept asking my friend where she got her Vibrams. On the way up we were seriously considering importing some shoes ourselves. It's like you said. Not only is the quality poorer here, but there are no "experts" like at REI or a good running store back in the states to explain what's actually happening. That's why those silly shoes with rolling heels (can't remember the brand but you guys know what I'm talking about) are doing so well in Korea--they're the only shoe store that explains what the shoe is supposed to do...even if it's really actually unhealthy.

People with size 10.5 feet are screwed in this country.

They have plenty of 10's. Plenty of 11's. No 10.5.

Ha! Where have you found size 11's? It's always size 10.5 that I see maximum.

There are some outlet stores around that sell brand name stuff at decent discounts. I recently got some nice size 15 Adidas sneakers in the giant outlet store in Yeoju for 55'000won. One of the cheapest pairs of shoes I've owned in recent memory having size 15 feet and all...
