A recruiter is advertising a $6000 payday on my last day in Korea.
I can't believe it, so I emailed him.
His name is Mitch Benvie, and this was his reply,
"If you are a US citizen you will receive 2.4 million pension plus last months pay and bonus one month pay on your last day. Minimum salary at 2 million korean won would make total 6.4 million won. Depending on exchange rate this will be around 6000 dollars. You will probably make more than 2 million won per month so it could be more. "
Since when do US citizens get a fixed pension amount? In all my contracts I was never paid exactly 2.4 million pension. Moreover, each time my pension was paid a couple weeks after leaving Korea, not on my last day in country.
Also, my last paycheck combined with the bonus is subjected to taxes and was less then 4 million.
Furthermore, we are paid in korean won and not us dollars.
I think he is a liar.
Oh, he since removed this promise from his website and job ad after my inquiry, so if it is true then why delete it? |

| My math at public school. 2.2 normal last month + 2.2 severance + 2.160 pension + 1.3 flight= 7.86 mil at the end of my contract, but i got to wait for pension and currency rates fluctuate. So the guy is on the level accept that usually it isn't paid all at once and the last day of your contract. |

"Last month" means the final month under the contract in this context and does not mean "previous month" as you seem to insinuate, although perhaps with humorous intentions since, of course, it could mean either depending on the context. |

Usually at the end of a one year contract, on your last day at your school, or certainly before you leave Korea you should get these things:
1) Your final month's pay (including any overtime etc.)
2) Severance pay equal to a month's pay
3) A refund of all Pension payments made (for some countries) - this comes from the Pension Office, so it will come on it's own schedule, which should be approximately 9% of your monthly base pay for either 11 or 12 months depending on certain factors. So, another month's pay.
4) Return airfare (amount depends on where you're from).
Yes, this should come to about 6,000 or 7,000 dollars, after taxes. |

No, I was SPECIFICALLY talking about the final month. I would want my final month's pay after I finish my final month. The contract in theory would have ended and unless I decided to stay in Korea, I would have to be on a plane out of Korea. So, I would want my money.
At no time was I referring to last as if it meant "previous". |

Curious.
You said you would want your pay on the day after you finished your last or final month. And you said "thank yous for waiting to pay me."
But the OP said ""If you are a US citizen you will receive 2.4 million pension plus last months pay and bonus one month pay on your last day" meaning one day earlier than you said you would want it.
So, since you said "thank yous for waiting" I'm guessing you would be waiting for that " -1 day" (negative day) in a time machine. |

Technically, I think the school has 14 days. I was stressing the point you would want to get money as soon as possible. You put, "Usually at the end of a one year contract, on your last day at your school, or certainly before you leave Korea"
I don't know why you are questioning when you basically stated the same thing.

You do know that immigration gives you some time before you have to leave Korea don't you? |

Legally severance pay is equal to the average of the last 3 months including any OT. So though the severance pay is often a month's pay...at times it can be more. |

| Final pay + severance + pension (collected about 3 weeks after you leave the country) = about $6000 for a newbie. |

No I'm not complaining. I don't get a pension. I don't get free housing. I don't even get medical or paid holidays. I just wanted to know if it was true that on your final day in korea your boss hands you $6000 as promised by this recruiter.
Here is what he said,"
Haha I was in Korea for 4 years. Just got home 3 months ago. I collected pension twice. Both times I applied as soon as I could and both times I got it before I left.
Pension is a set amount based on what country you are from. It is not up to your boss on how much goes in. I had a boss who refused to pay pension. It was in my contract, I took him to labour board and got it all in full. As a Canadian mine was 94 000 a month each."
I didn't know that Americans were guaranteed 2,400,000 pension.
I didn't know you were paid that on your last day in Korea.

All teachers SHOULD get it, by law. Many hagwons won't pay it unless you pester them to do so.
If you're American it's great, you basically get an additional months pay as I understand it. As a UK citizen it sucks, because that money is just being thrown into a black hole. |
