The bus is so much better.

Yeah, the subway will take longer and you'll have to transfer twice if you're going from Itaewon to Gangnam station. I live in Itaewon and work around Gangnam station. The 421 is your bus, and most of the other posts here are correct. Depending on exactly where you're going, you can minimize your travel time by transferring buses, too. Google maps will actually give you every bus option available and you can pinpoint the exact locations you're going to, use that, you don't need a smartphone. It's a great resource, but who knows how up to date it is. I know the Gangnam subway exits were mixed up a number of months ago, but I have zero insight on that because I NEVER take the subway at Gangnam station, for obvious reasons: It's a madhouse, and I don't want to stare at the back of peoples' heads while standing up for an hour just to get home.

I really would not trust google maps in Korea, the odd time I've had cause to use it I've found it less than reliable. It's extremely simple to use Daum or Naver maps even for someone who doesn't know Korean. You need a couple keywords and that's it.

I've always taken the subway there, because I didn't know which bus to take. I absolutely hate the subway. It's crowded, you can almost never sit down, it takes longer than the bus, it smells like kimchi, dried squid and stale cigarettes...and it takes three lines to get from Gangnam to Itaewon, unless you take the green line all the way around to where it intersects with the brown line, although the time difference may not take any longer than transferring to the orange line at Kyodae. Either way, I take the bus over the subway whenever possible.

I can read Korean, but is it really that simple to use Daum and Naver if you can't read Korean? Honest question, I rarely/never use those sites. I just pulled up google maps and it gave fairly precise information on bus routes to and from the places we're talking about. It will give you various bus options. I've only used google maps inside of Korea when I changed jobs, but I used it a great deal in the US. There are a variety of options for the OP depending on where he's going exactly.

If you have the ability to match squiggly line to squiggly line yes. I posted the instructions at the top of this page. You really don't need to be able to read that much.
2 clicks, matching a word off a very short list, and then clicking on one more. The buses are all listed there.

Then that's that. It is simple: match the squiggly line to the squiggly line. I didn't click on your link before because I already know how to get there. Thank you for your services, though. Again, I've never had a reason to use daum or naver, personally. Eh, I just read that back to myself and it sounded condescending, but I didn't mean it to be that way.

Because, as I've said, I've found google to not always be accurate. While it may have been accurate in the case you just checked, it may not be in another.

Let's have another look at two areas in both maps:
Google: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2416/57918724.png
Daum: http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/1995/29104660.png

Google is missing an entire level of detail. Dozens of streets don't even exist, not even small dead-ends. Even streets which are meant for traffic don't even exist. The circled 7-11 on the map has been gone at least 6-12 months

Google has also done nothing to indicate the presence of a park near the station.

The exit layouts of that station aren't quite right. Close, but it shows a further inattention to detail.

Google also doesn't actually show the bus stops. You can get directions and then find out there is a bus there, but you can't just view the stops to see what buses go there.

When I first got directions on a route I sometimes take, it listed one of the usual buses, but then also listed a bus which doesn't even exist as a suggested route.
Perplexed I clicked on the bus icon and it then removed the route and showed proper routes.

Knowing that google really isn't making a detailed map the question is why you'd ever want to use it.

Living in Seoul tip number 1: learn how to work the bus system. It took me ages to get around to figuring it out but it's actually really easy. It's often much quicker than getting the subway.

As others have said, the Korean sites (Naver maps/ Daum maps) are the way to go. Up to date information on nearly all buses (except some small village buses). Just ask a Korean friend or coworker to show you which buttons are for departure and which are for arrival. It's pretty intuitive.
