|
|
My job ends in two months, and I'm wondering if I should receive severance on my official last day. Or does your boss usually include it in your final paycheck?
Should I demand it on the last day? I'm worried about not receiving it and want to make sure things are as squared away as they can be before I jet outta the country. |

I would say get all your money on your last day.
I'm in the same boat as you, and hoping for the best. |

Talk with the hagwon. If you bring it up to them on the last day, don't expect them to have it. Get them thinking about it now, it's easier for them to say, "Oh, I will pay you on your last day. I am busy now. See you tomorrow."
Next, bring it up again when you find out about travel arrangements when you go back home. |

LEGALLY they are not required to pay it out until 14 days after your termination of employment.
Practically, I would NOT leave Korea without it unless you are prepared to lose it.
Start asking about it a month or two before your end of contract.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm going to have this dreaded discussion with my director and hope she agrees.... |

Hakwon, don't leave Korea without it. Public School, give them your banking info back home and have them wire it. Make sure you keep phone numbers of school business, local ed office, teachers, directors, etc. If your public school tries to pull some stunt, you can call them at all hours and harass them via cheap calls over Skype. |

fyi, totally wrong approach
it's ok to be casual, but whatever else you do, don't even HINT that you are worried about this - you might ask what would be an easier method of payment for your boss to make, transfer or cash? would they like to pay it out on your last day or before hand? let them know you plan to (fill in here) and just wanted to make it easier for them.
do not, if at all possible, say anything about you'd like to make sure you get paid before leaving the country - hopefully one doesn't need to explain why this is a bad idea (see TP's post) |

Definitely ask for it along with your last month's salary... and make sure they give it to you on the last day of teaching or before. If not, you'll have to go to a separate meeting and hope they show up, or risk losing it. My boss made me meet him the day before I got on the plane (for the 40hour trip he'd set up~ yay 18 hour layover!) and was spooked when I didn't come alone >.>
Definitely act like this is a normal thing, but one that you are knowledgeable about and expect promptly. |

To be fair, before I left my last academy they owed me about six grand. I flew home and about a week later it was in my bank account. |

I don't see how leaving without your money is "fair". Pension is one thing, but your employer should be paying everything you owe within a reasonable time. It's your choice to take a chance, but I don't see that as "fair". |

Because it ran on pay cycles. They paid for my flight back and I left before their pay cycle hit. They never once shorted me on anything and were even generous. It was stated in my contract WHEN I would be paid. Like Tompatz said, they have 14 days. They paid within their allocated time. |

It's still a gamble. If they were going to pay like you have outlined, then I would have either offered to pay extra to stay until the pay date, or I would have found a place to stay. My understanding is that you can get 30 days before you have to leave. It is changed over to a tourist functioning visa.
With the new D10, you could possibly get longer time. It's good it worked out for you, and waiting for your final pay doesn't mean you think your school is bad. |
