Beyond your knee-jerk assumptions and overreaction do you actually have a point you're trying to make here?
I understand the Korean announcements just fine, never once said or indicated that I didn't. So beyond your total misreading of the post, is there something you're actually getting at?
If you don't think they're putting the English there for the tourists, and anyone living here long term should learn Korean, who exactly do you think they're trying to serve with all the English they're putting everywhere on the subway system? And if they're making such an effort to make the system accessible in English, shouldn't they address a couple of key announcements?

They're abroad and likely will be inconvenieced by the oddity of newness to begin with (believe it or not, that's usually what they go abroad for to begin with and end up calling it cultural difference). I doubt that an annoucement over the subway will make all their inconveniences go away. So stop trying to blame your ignorance on tourists. Suck it up, pull out a book, and study. |
You've written that once already. You like the sight of your own words so much you feel the need to just repeat them over and over again? Again: You've made this accusation that I don't seem to understand the announcements how many times now, and you're basing it on what exactly? A suggestion that they should finish a job they started? impeccable logic. |

Have you ever considered that perhaps making Korea more accomodating and convenient for foreigners is the main reason why the country is losing so much of why the foreigners come here to begin with, namely KOREA?
And yes, announcements, signs, signals, briefings, English-friendly menus, and the like contribute. But, hell, I think the country is accomodated to death. Any more accomodation and there'd be no reason to even call it Korea.
You get it? So yes. Learn to put up with it. If you're arguing on the behalf of tourists, then I'm taken a bit at a blank here...are you working for the Ministry of Sports and Tourism? If you speak the language, then why are you whining about conveniencing the system for those who are less off. Ah...perhaps you're the American, I mean Superman, coming to the damsel in distress? That would explain it. |

Wow, you can barely get through a post without assuming yourself right into trollville.
No, i'm not american. As I said in my original post: They've already gone to great lengths to make the system English accessible, but they're missing a couple of key announcements that would more or less make it complete.
That's it. Whatever else you're trying to read into is your own fantasy and creation and whatever need it is you think you're trying to satisfy as the great defender of Korean culture (last samurai complex perhaps?) is so far off the mark, it's laughable. |

Did u really think that I meant ure American? U really are curtailing the point. By the way, I am American! We usually have inference skills, so honestly I figured u weren't American from the start.
Any comments on the post or just throwing salt on the dirt floor in prep for belly bumping? |

Comment on your overwhelming assistance to the foreign community I mean. You didn't answer the question: don't you think that such accomodations for (what you seem to mistakenly believe is for short-term) tourists is ill placed and only amounts to un-Koreanizing the country at their expense?
For a person so adroit at Korean (oh, wait! that's an assumption--and likely an extremely erroneous one), don't you think that such accomodations merely work against you and your efforts, the country's attempts at marketing & branding itself across the world, oh, and let's not forget against those poor "short-term" foreingers who come here with the impression that they'll be hmmm...how should I put it...inconvenienced (or perhaps...O dear me.... I dread the thought....but maybe even, culturally shocked)? Gosh, sometimes my logic is so off...right? |

No, because it's irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
I recommended they finished a program they already have in place and have mostly completed. You've ridden in as the last great white knight making all kinds of foolish assumptions. As I said, whatever it is you're looking for here, it isn't here. Plenty of non-english countries provide english services, translations, etc for tourists and other individuals who need them. |

Your continuous concern for the short-term tourist is hilarious. Name one country that has recorded emergency announcements on its public transit in a non-native tongue to appease inconvenienced tourists and I'll slither into my little hole and think about more important things.
Otherwise, wake up buddy. |

Announcing a delay isn't an emergency announcement. It's a service announcement.
again, we're talking about Korea, not other countries. They've started a system, I suggested they finish a partially finished job.
Whatever issue you imagine that exists here, I'd suggest valium. |

Is it just me, or did you fail to answer the question? Interchange "emergency announcement on public transit," with "delay on public transit," "service announcement," or "what have you," and you'll still find yourself in a fix. Besides, having such an announcement wouldn't necessarily make anyone any more or less comfortable.
Point being, what exactly is your point!? You think Korea is supposed to bend over backwards to "complete"ly make your long-term, pathetically whinosaurs a$$ comfortable or what? For tourists? Get real dude. Tourists are no less shocked by a DELAY in a subway getting to the next stop as they are about bowing and seeing circles and lines all around them.
You say complete now, but you'll likely say create elsewhere (assumption). Seoul's got one of the greatest subways systems in the world if not in all of Asia (even better than Tokyo's web of confusion). We clearly love it and rely on it every day of our lives and you still find the space to find fault (hmm...logic would seem to suggest this is why I assume you're a whiner). Perhaps the subway can do with improvements (as with most technology), but Korea's done enough to English-ize (Westernize would be an over and understatement) itself and there's no need to take it any further.
You're talking only about Korea, you say, not other countries! Why of course you are! Why? Because Korea made the massive mistake of appeasing you and your neediness from the outset. It attempted to bilingualize itself and pushed for making YOU less inconvenienced by its native values and language.
Now, you whine about any and everything. You throw fits and tantrums because they "just haven't finished what they started," without even giving a damn about whether they are single-handedly destroying the little bit of authenticity they have left to, again, make you (oh...and those short-term visitors- ) happy.
Do you honestly think that running around preaching what this country needs without considering the negative spillover effects makes a great deal of sense or shows logical judgement?
This is a public announcement: "안녕하십니까? 한국에 와서 감사하고 환영합니다." and add "한국에서는 한국어로 소통할 수 못 하면 열심히 참고, 싫다면 한국어를 열심히 배워 주시기 바랍니다." Otherwise, accept the short inconvenience and the brief inability to know about a delay. Besides, YOU'RE ONLY A SHORT-TERM VISITOR (believe it or not, this is an erroneous assumption...I know).
Take your advice and Korea would be spending pennies here and pennies there, but losing a great deal of itself and its character. As a semi-fluent Korean speaker yourself (gosh...me and these assumptions), don't you think that there's enough language bastardization and money being wasted on a futile attempt at making tourists happy in the country already? Do we really need to hear more crap being said on the subway? I'm sorry, but I get enough of the excessive number of announcements and broadcasts on the bus and don't see any need for adding to the noise on the subway. Yes, even for your tourists' convenience.
So instead of trying (rather poorly) to end your comments with personal insults, try thinking about what you're proposing and consider whether, maybe...just maybe (no matter how strong and easy your suggestion may seem at first glance), you're perhaps being a bit rash. |

You were at the station when they made an announcement? Was it in English? Just curious because it has been reported that no information was given in English. Also, the announcements were incomplete regarding the actual problems. |
The announcements were all in Korean... And said nothing about the actual problem.
First, there were just delays for train spacing. Then they said the line was down.
No other details. |

god would you two knock it off you sound like a couple of children.
it would be nice if announcements like there will be a delay etc were made in English. Heck the station announcements are made in English and what lines you can transfer to are also done in English.
It would take like 2 minutes to record them.
then again like most things here, it makes too much sense to do it |

Yeah, right! You're so right. I think they should also have announcements in Korean and English for when they are going to close the door. And oh, oh, oh. What about adding like a digital countdown timer so that I'll know not to even try getting on. That would just make too much sense now wouldn't it. Oh, and you know, they should really have some way of telling me if the subway cart is one of those that accommodates bikes in the front, it so gets me revved up when I've got that first standing spot in the front only to find that it's actually a bike cart. Oh yeah, and how about signs that say if the toilet is on the outside or the inside. You know those little bells just don't work unless the guards booth is close to them. I went to a station once, press and pressed to no avail. Oh, oh, oh...come on their not complete. I have a pretty sensitive rump and I don't really like the steal chairs. They should have a sign or even an instant message that send a message to people who want to know if it's a cushion train or a hardseater. Oh, oh, and yeah, they should really make the lightly air-conditioned seat area standard on all subways, so that they can put a sign at the station that tells me where to stand. Wait, wait, wait, I mean gosh there's so much more that they haven't finished. It sure would be convenient if they...
