I've read that wild boars are a problem in some areas of Korea. It seems that in the past the gov't has encouraged hunters to get rid of them. Has anyone tried to get a license to hunt one or looked into it. I imagine they use bows or spears here instead of the handgun/dog combo like in the US

Nah they actually got guns here. I'm no expert but I know hunters use shotguns. Not sure about other types of guns are allowed. They also allow as big ass 00 BK, although I have no idea if that's big enough to drop a boar. Slugs are illegal. But you need to have a hunter's license and a weapon license to own an actual firearm. Don't know if foreigners can get them.

Not sure if hunting with arrows is common though I know they sell hunting bows. They do have dog and hawk hunting too (using them to hunt, not hunting them).

On the topic of guns in Korea, I looked up some interesting stats about firearms though. The overall number of guns is declining, but the number of actual guns that fire live ammo has increased in the past several years. People are buying less airsoft and gas guns.

I've occasionally seen used 12 gauge shells while hiking near cities. No idea what is being hunted though.

People who own guns have to store them at the police station and sign them out to go hunting. There are only a few people in the country who get a license to actually go hunting. It's not a popular activity. I saw a special on TV about boar hunting last year.
The government recently increased the amount that hunters were allowed to kill, but there was no rush to do it. Your best bet would be to find someone who is hunting and see if you can go with them.

Might wanna stick to popular hiking trails. Me? I hike all over and one day last February on some small hill near farms and a major road a labrador approached me, then a pair of'em and yet another. Finally a Korean man walked by fully decked out for hunting pheasants with a shotgun tucked under his arm wearing his hunter orange. My first thought was, 'sh!t, where's MY orange?! Better not shoot me~'

Get a grip, big game hunter.

There's no big game left ti kill in this country, they've already wiped it out. Because people like you love to kill kill kill defenceless animals.

Boar are rare. Talk even to the old timers. You will find nobody who has ever seen one even after many years living here, including regular hikers and fishermen. On the few occasions they are a "nuisance" is when they keep building appatuh complexes in the last few places that they still live in.

Hunting. Pshaww. Dream on

I once ate wild boar with a Korean soccer team I was on it. Legend has it that the adjushi killed it with only his spit.

Wow..
no. In the last few years there has been a population explosion. They've had boars chasing people into places, a couple years ago there was a video of a boar that was trapped in an ATM area with a guy. The boar ended up killing himself on the door trying to get out. The report I saw indicated there had been dozens of incidents over the last year.

I miss my guns. I\'d love to blast a boar to pieces with my .30-30

I wonder if E-Mart has an ammo section? How do you say: \"Winchester
.30-30 hunting rounds, please\" in Korean?

Damn, I remember back in the world going out to the clearcut with my
buddies, a ton of beer, lots of guns and lots of ammo.

Good times.

Didn't you see the news where boars were running around attacking people in urban areas? They also showed hunters shooting them with guns and the boars just shrugging it off. You need big calibers to drop those things. It's probably borderline suicide, but I'd love to hunt some boars with spears.

I've seen wild boars on two occasions, although once it was just a dead one. Plenty of deer as well.

Where is bluelake these days? Last I knew, he actually had permits to shoot (and/or possibly own?) muskets due to his Ph.D. work. He posted a Youtube video of himself shooting some old Korean muskets alongside some army dudes here, but that was on another forum.

My wife's father used to sell guns in Busan, but he died 7 years ago. Up until a few years back, whenever the Korean president visited Busan, the local Gu office STILL called his widow to confirm that the guns in his store were secured, despite him being dead for years and the business being long-gone. It made her very upset.
