No soapbox. I just find the stance taken by some in this thread to be a bit naive and to show a certain lack of experience with work environment relationships.

It's called kissing the customer's @#$%^&, and it happens in every country.

One thing I've learned in Korea, the customer is always right.

Not saying I agree with what happened, it sucks, but it ain't all about culture and saving face. (even if it seems that way)

By the way, I doubt very much this place will be asking you to renew at the end of your contract. They will probably use this as an excuse to try and
shaft you on your final pay, in fact it's most likely.

So prepare yourself OP.

Sorry, but that's the way I see it.

Re Julius
What I wrote is exactly what happened and if you had seen earlier I had admited to playfully tapping kids every now and then, and my problem ws I couldnt remember if I had done it to this child. thats why i was concerned if cctv showed me having any phyical contact with this student it could be misinturpd as more than it was.
gez i even get my kids that learn TaeKwondo to show me a few moves and blocks etc... its all just relationship building but im gonna stay 'stuff it' to that now coz on cctv it is possible it could look like something else.
what a said place this can be.
the kids miss out in the end

Back in the U.S or other Western countries even touching the kid's shoulder can get you fired. So why is this a sad place when it's even worse back home?

Let's say that I accept your conclusion that it's worse back home. That doesn't mean that Korea can't be a sad place, from time-to-time.

Certainly. And I never said otherwise. Only pointing out (as other people have) that this kind of stuff happens everywhere. Like another poster I also was a Ontario (Canada) public school teacher for a few years. You want "sad" I have a few stories that make this incident pale in comparison (people getting fired/taken to court...and they were innocent).

Now I'm not attempting to trivialize the OP's experience. I have no doubt it was a extremely unpleasant and humiliating incident. Just saying that it's not out of the ordinary when there is a major student-teacher controversy where the administration and parents get involved.

when I got to work monday morning there was a gift of coffee waiting for me on my desk from the education officer. The directors didn't show their faces all day.

OP, I think you handled it to the best of your ability.

Good on ya.

I know it's tempting to be resentful and want something out of this (an apology perhaps), but I think you're handling this right.

Read this as it you should: they are saying thanks for being understanding by leaving such a gift.

Move on.
