Currently my situation is that I taught full time for a year and for 7 months now I have been teaching "part time" though 16 hours teaching a week and studying Korean at university programs 20 hours/week. This has grown wearisome on me. At the moment I am pretty tired of my current life style however good in theory it may sound to me or others.
The biggest reason I came here in the first place was for my girlfriend whom I had met in university in the states. Now I would like to go back to the states to find another career while having the ability to come back to Korea in the future. I am aware that it's not really a good idea to base my life plans around a girl especially in a country that I don't see myself in long term, however that's the situation I am currently in at the moment. So it will be a big step for me to depart from this girl. She isn't able to come to the states and marriage is not something I consider lightly and we are both too young for.
There are different types of working fields I would like to try out back in the states however if I have a goal of becoming international with my career that could help me narrow things down a bit. I have read some of the parachute book however just the first 10-20% of it and haven't gotten into the "finding what you really want to do" part.
These days I find myself in a state of depression I have never been in before and it doesn't feel good to say the least. I have ups and downs as far as my feeling from day to day. I feel a bit lost, confused, anxious, not enjoying life in Korea and uncertain of the future.
I am not working on a contract so I could leave in June, or vacation for 1-2 weeks, or work/study until September and then leave. Some days it sounds great and others it's horrible and I want to leave the next day.
Any suggestions for what I should do regarding my current situation here in Korea and or my future plans for finding work stateside? Thanks |

Marrying to gain freedom is an oxymoron. |

I was speaking vocationally. despite all the colorful suggestions in this thread, a resident visa really is the way to go. If people want to make a go long-term of it in Korea, they really need to start looking at the E2 visa as a stepping stone to a life in Korea. Transitioning from an E2 to a points resident visa is really the best way for a foreigner to make a long-term life in Korea short of getting married. At that point it becomes much less of a "what visa can I get to do something?" question and a "What do I really want to do here in Korea?" question.
But yes, to give yourself the best employment options you either get married or get one of several resident visas. |

Sireno,
I have been (and still am) in a similar situation as you and I know exactly how you feel.
What you need to do is first organize all your thoughts, ideas, desires in some sort of tangible format. Buy a small notebook and start writing from the get go what exactly you want. What is the thing you want most?
Then you can start putting the pieces together. How happy are you in Korea? Are you consistently happy? Are you unhappy because of the country you are in or because of the life you are living? Is it both? Would you consider staying in Korea for several years because of your current girlfriend? How important is a career in the US for you? Do you already have a plan on how to find work in the United States? How are you doing on your savings? |
