I think that it largely has to do with things like ship insurance rates being higher if there are guns on board, various company policies, and I think that in many ports you can not dock if there are firearms aboard.

An AK47 costs like $350+ in the USA. Those guys appear to be using AR-15's in 5.57 Nato. Can be had for $700 and up, roughly. A captain and just one other guy could hold off pirates in open boats like that. Being so high above the pirates is a ludicrously huge positive advantage.

You don't really even need to hire security crew.

You could get them even cheaper in other countries although I wouldn't be sure of the quality. Get a few MGs with enough ammo and I imagine a ship could hold off a pirate boat. Saw a Korean doc about the UDT guys there and the showed a few bursts from a 50 cal sends them all running.

What makes you think that your average sailor is gung ho about getting into a gun fight with pirates?

Yeah, I am sure they would much rather just give up and let themselves become hostages. That has worked out just great for those who have survived.

If you really want to be more informed on the issue I suggest you read the book I cited earlier, as he addresses this point at length. Prior to doing so, I actually agreed with what you're saying here. At this point, however, I feel that there's a pretty compelling case against having guns on board. Do you really think that it's a novel idea to put firearms on board ships? There are valid reasons that this isn't standard procedure.

Not sure the guy's name, but there's a brit that does documentaries about hanging out with dangerous types: gangs,etc..

His name is Russel _____ (Brand is the only name I can think, and I know it's wrong).

He did time with Royal Marines patrolling that area, and the problem is that it's HUGE, plus you have refugee boats fleeing Somalia. They protected a boat, then it got taken 24 hours later.

I'm not one for war, nor do I think much of curbing guns in the states, but hells yes, give freighters deck guns. Give crew assault rifles. What I heard was that pirates were rolling up with RPG's. Give crew RPG's.

If they offhandedly sink a refugee boat, let them pay in spades as well, BUT refugee boats don't come up on you to board you now, do they?

Pirating is getting carried away. Even stay-at-home and mind-your-own business China is venturing out hunting pirates.

Loved the vid.

Not really.

If the navy is in helicopter range, it's easy peasy. The problem is they can't be. The area we're talking about is HUGE. Not helicopter range at all. See video I referenced.

You don't need RPGs. You can bust up those little wooden motor boats with heavy MGs. Better range too. What you need is better armor but that could get expensive.
