The police incompetence here reminds me of what happened in the Jeffrey Dahmer case:
In the early morning hours of May 27, 1991, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone (by coincidence, the younger brother of the boy whom Dahmer had molested) was discovered on the street, wandering naked, heavily under the influence of drugs and bleeding from his rectum. Two young women from the neighborhood found the dazed boy and called 911. Dahmer chased his victim down and tried to take him away, but the women stopped him. Dahmer told John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish, police officers dispatched to the scene, that Sinthasomphone was his 19-year-old boyfriend, and that they had an argument while drinking. Against the protests of the two women who had called 911, the officers turned him over to Dahmer. They later reported smelling a strange scent while inside Dahmer's apartment, but did not investigate it. The smell was the body of Tony Hughes, Dahmer's previous victim, decomposing in the bedroom. The officers did not make any attempt to verify Sinthasomphone's age and failed to run a background check that would have revealed Dahmer was a convicted child molester still under probation. Later that night, Dahmer killed and dismembered Sinthasomphone, keeping his skull as a souvenir. |

In this case there is the police incompetence issue but there is also this...

| His neighbors heard a woman screaming for help, but didnt report to police because they thought it was a quarrel between a husband and wife |

I'm not a fan of have-a-go-heroism and the white knight approach of some of the keyboard warriors on here....
But i've also felt increasingly uneasy with a lot of comments about - "just ignore it" - "not worth getting involved" when people hear pretty alarming domestic violence through the walls... and this case makes me wonder if anyone is willing to reassess that position in light of this case? ... how would you feel if you had ignored it/put in the earplugs then discovered that someone had been brutally murdered.?
I think this news story makes it clearer - cover your own back for sure - but walking on by is not the right thing to do...our culture or not. |

Actually in the Dahmer case, his neighbors smelled and heard all sorts of stuff as well, but never bothered reporting it.
What's not unusual for the haters on here is that they will so readily condemn Koreans for not doing anything about a woman's screams, yet they are the same ones saying that you should not get involved when you see a woman get beat. Either way it is ammo for their hate/racism fuelled agenda. |

I think people forget that Korea's like... one of the least rape/murder ridden countries in the world. So when stuff like this happens they aren't prepared for it.
Police in Korea generally do what? Stare at screens all day. They don't do much. There are no guns, so much less theft, and probably deal with domestic calls most of the time. Of course they are more incompetent. The less you do something the less you're accustomed to dealing with it.
Everyday I walk by stores that leave their goods outside, unlocked bikes, and I don't think I've even seen or needed a police officer ever in my time here.
Guys, seriously it's a tragedy, but if you're getting angry about it, probably shouldn't be. Don't have such high expectations about everything. |

I live all of about 5 minutes from where this happened. I actually went down to the scene, (now, I knew what house it was from the news reports) and it's not really a stretch to find out where it was. There aren't too many gates on that part of the street, and with a life-and-death situation, knocking on a few doors and waking a few people up wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
Furthermore, when I first learned of this story and posted about it on Facebook, there must have been a half dozen Koreans who posted commenting on how he was Chinese and how scary Chinese people are... |

I never had the impression that Korea had a low muder rate - the sheer number of serial killers I have heard about over the years put paid to that. Lower than average petty crime maybe (especially in comparison to the thefts and burglaries rife in my home country) but not murder and rape.
I'm just thankful Koreans aren't allowed to have guns. If that ever happens, I'm leaving! |

And if Koreans were allowed to easily obtain firearms, the suicide rate would be five times what it already is. |

The reason for "don't get involved when women gets beat" is because apparently, the woman getting beat will side with her husband/boyfriend who's doing the beating. So if the cops come, she'll say that nothings going on. If you try to stop a wife beater from beating his wife, you could apparently get thrown under the bus and be accused of assault.
Asia is different from north america. There are many aspects of Korea that are better than North America and there are many aspects of Korea that are worse than N. America. Treatment of women in Korea is worse than it is in N. America. That's my opinion after living in both places. |

| I guess videotape the beating if possible. Through it up on youtube. And be done with it. |

Perhaps you missed my earlier question for you.... You said that Korea is hiding a bunch of murders... Got much to back that up? |

Expecting the cops to respond to "Help! Somebody's trying to rape me!" in less than 13 hours is high of an expectation? |

yeah the link above states the 135 missing and murdered girls.
also the guy north of seoul the so called Rainy day killer whom they caught 3 weeks ago, the police found like 30 female watches in his house and the police "believe he might be a serial killer" what gives the police that idea? maybe that they know there are many girls missing in that area too, but we only heard about him because he got caught.
today in the newspaper they reported on the girl found in pusan.
ok, every now and then we hear about a girl being found.
but what I am saying, obviously there are hundreds which dont make the papers, out of general fear to the public. |

| Is the 'Rainy Day killer' you are referring to the same killer in the film 'Memories of Murder'? |
