I think it would be far more helpful if you mentioned that you enjoy running without a shirt.

Damn you beat me to it! Laughing

It is a fantastic idea Zack! In fact it is the best idea you ever had. I would put what you said in your Resume and also be sure to add what your screename is on here. Better yet, provide them with a sample of your posts here on issues such as dating 18 year olds because they be legal, running past schools without a shirt for the "compliments", dating women who only agree with you because women with opinions are bad.

Go for it man!

Let us know how it turns out.

I'm a CLASS A LOSER. I have nowhere else to go and nothing else to do with my life besides "teaching" here in Korea. I am pretty clueless when it comes to teaching so I just waste time in class. I have no friends here and if it wasn't for Dave's ESL Cafe I don't know how I would ever get by not only in this country but in my life as well.

Ignore the haters on this thread mate. You should definately mention it. It shows that you interested in teaching and that you are social. Just make sure you come back to this thread afterwards for an update on how it went.

When employers ask for hobbies and things like that would it be ok to tell them that " I am an active member of Dave's ESL Discussion Forum"?

not sure being on any internet forum is considered a hobby; it is more like entertainment and leisure time. A hobby is generally a pursuit with a goal in mind, such as biking, photography, painting, fishing, fixing old cars. The kinds of activities that one pursues for enjoyment but some of which could actually be occupations if monetary amounts were involved.

If they probe deeper about it would it be appropriate to say things like "I have helped people live a better life and have contributed to their improvement as an English teacher"? How does all this sound?

unless your mailbox is overflowing with thank yous and praises it's a bit odd that you'd even make this statement. maybe your communication (English) skills are just a wee bit off - it'd certainly come off better if you said something along the lines of joining the discussion with other expat teachers in Korea regarding various teaching methods, classroom activities and approaches to students' questions regarding grammar, sentence construction and improved techniques.

I can't help wonder if you are serious about this, just trolling or have some other motive in mind? I've often discussed a question that was posed on Dave's with Korean co-teachers and others, but what you've suggested here is just, well, odd.

Sure thing. I exemplify a healthy aspect of American culture by running. And since running shirtless makes me feel much more comfortable and run faster then that's great. My health right now is very good.

Yeah I used to time it when the middle and high schooler's (girls of course) got out of school and the blast past them screaming like a maniac. Oh dude it was so awesome. Pure pandemonium to the extreme. "I live for this"!

Anyway back to the issue at hand....I just wondered if saying I posted on Dave's was an ok hobby to mention.

Why single out Dave's? They might think you have OCD.

OCD?

Not singling out Dave's. I mean I belong to other sites as well. But since this site is more Korea related than the others this is why I specifically asked about Dave's.

Freaks, weirdos drunks, skirt-chasers etc they can deal with - actually they love because it gives them a scapegoat but a person up on his game like Ttompatz is the real threat.

Go ahead and try it. See how "impressed" they are. I predict two possible responses:

1. "Dave's what?"

or...

2. "Oh. That site."

Oh, and, no, it's not a social group. I know Facebook has a lot of people confused on the matter, but sitting alone in your room in front of the computer is not being social.

and you came to this conclusion because you got your first computer about the same time FB came into the internet??

fyi, Dave's was/is probably the first site of its kind for expats - many of us who were quite isolated in the day - myself not even as much as others who came even earlier - and the internet was very much a social mechanism for us to meet, communicate and find each other in a country which, at the time, did not have that many opportunities for other Westerners to communicate directly.

obviously, with all its warts and moles, Dave's still must have something going on to have lasted as long as it has, and to still be as popular as it is, so yes, I would consider this in the context of a social site.

True. True. There are a lot of trolls on the forum but very few of them spin an entertaining tale for us. Hats off to Zackback.
