|
|
Hello everyone, as I lost out on several opportunities in the last cycle by not finding the adverts for positions, or the positions never being advertised in the first place, I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me a heads up if their University is hiring this fall.
I don't have a masters so anywhere that only hires with a masters is out, although I will be starting one in the fall. I have a good few years of experience and TEFL certificates along with a strong interest in language acquisition and teaching methodologies.
I'm not asking for anyone to recommend me but if anyone could give me contact details for Universities hiring, especially if they are unlikely to advertise the position, it would be greatly appreciated. I am open to moving just about anywhere in Korea |

Erm, why is it lazy to take the time to write a post on a board which I know a lot of university teachers read asking if anyone knows of anything? By networking I know of a few positions which will be available in the fall which won't be advertised therefore these positions won't appear on any of the job boards I check daily or through the google searches I also do daily. I can't however network with the entire country hence why I asked here. And if your university was advertising anywhere there is a good chance it's one of several I have already applied to. |

Wow really? I wanted to start applying for a college position, but I thought they started hiring in May/June. Is your university typical? |

you're a lazy a$$ for asking people here if their univ is hiring instead of doing your homework. 90% of the jobs aren't advertised here anymore, most are now done via the schools own websites or via word of mouth.
asking if a univ. is good is no problem here but asking people to hand you job leads is a bit much |

Don't worry OP, someone who goes by "hogwanguy1979" might not be the best person to ask for uni leads. |

Word of mouth, what I am asking for here IN ADDITION to googling, checking uni homepages, job posting boards etc.
I hope having a dig at someone trying hard to ge a Job they seriously want has made your day better. |

Wouldn't happen to be Kookmin University would it?
They gave applicants all of an 8 day window to apply. And can you let me know where they actually advertised these positions?
The hiring process has four stages.
I know it is a top tier uni but it sounds very elitist and overblown. The most important parts of a recruitment process are the START not the END. Any human resources professional will tell you that. Crap in crap out. I am not sure what you can get in with an 8 day window and no advertising...
If it's not your uni, then no probs. But my point still stants for whoever's uni it is. |

Since you don't have a Master's, you might want to try looking into 2-year technical colleges. They often offer similar conditions and benefits as university jobs, but often don't require a graduate degree.
Don't be afraid to take hogwonguy's advice, either. If you don't have connections, but you're flexible about location, cast as wide a net as you can. There are hundreds of schools out there, find their addresses online (pretty much every uni and college in the country has an English page) and send them your resume blind. If you send out hundreds of resumes, most of them might go into the trash, but you only need one job.
Good luck! |

Well you lack a Masters so the University I used to work for and with whom I remain in contact would unfortunately rule you out.
Still, it is a decent idea to post your question here and those that ranted against you..well what can you do?
One thing, your profile (professionally) remains quite vague...experience is not created equal, especially when it comes to Univsersity positions! This goes double for referenced vs un-referenced experience. Bascially the latter kind tends to be ignored by Universities.
By all means network as this is a smart play and a great way to gain access to information about jobs.
Best of luck to you! |

Is Kookmin top-tier? I'll have to ask a friend to confirm, but I believe that they didn't even pay pension, and after he reached their term limit, they offered to re-hire him at a massive pay deduction.
I could be wrong on the school, though...
Is that what one can expect from a top-tier school? |

I have some friends who have worked there and thats the problem they've run into, pay is good and lots of OT for the years there.
Whats amazing is some of the top univs (SNU and Yonsei in particular) pay crap wages and have crap conditions, they figure since they are an "elite" school they can treat you like crap. The only exception I know of is Kodae, my friends there say its great
You'll find many second and third tier schools pay well, have good working conditions and leave you alone. I've known people who have taught at these schools for over a decade and love it. |

Yes! Many "top tier" schools pay higher salaries, but don't provide housing, don't provide airfare, don't pay severance and have term limits. They are just giving with one hand and taking with the other.
Brand name doesn't necessarily mean better. |
