He shouldn't be using novacaine. Dentists in the west don't use that stuff, they use something esle. I doubt if he is using novacaine. Anyhow the trick is to find a good dentist.
Another thing, the infection in your tooth has to be cleared up before having anything done to it because the acid the infection produces will inhibit the effects of the local painkiller. Also try having your tooth pulled and see if it feels any better. I doubt if you will like that either. The root canal is the best option. |

Was waiting for Mr. Self Rightous to make an appearance.
FYI lots of people can brush and floss till there wrist is sore and still require root canals. Genetically weak teeth isn't that uncommon. |
Speaking of self-righteous, at least he didn't call people idiots because he doesn't understand what a single visit root canal is. Don't worry, some of us still got to see the post you deleted so hastily.
For those who don't know that much about single visit root canals I suggest you start here
Unless there is serious infection already there is no reason to go with a multiple visit root canal, and in fact a single visit root canal helps prevent infection between visits. |

I fail to see where coralreefer, the person you were quoting and jumping all over called anyone an idiot. |

Damn right. I had the unique displeasure of being present while a friend had his broken ankle set with no anesthetic. I've never heard a grown man scream so hard before or since.
|
Yup, me too. Except this guy only had a small break in his hand. He knew the deal and asked for double the pain med dosage. It was still too weak so they put in an IV for the strong stuff. But there was a problem with the IV and it wasn't really going into his system.
The bone setter guy shows up, sees the IV problem but says "I don't have have time" (it was the middle of the night and the ER was empty so may have wanted to just go back to sleep again).
Never heard a grown man scream so hard, and they set it incorrectly.
The bone setter actually walked out grinning. At least in the old days they'd give you a piece of leather to bite for the pain.
Again, insist on pain meds. If they don't want to give it, they are just being lazy. A good doctor will give it if requested. |

I've had fabulous experiences with dentists in Korea.
The blanket statement to never get a root canal in Korea is obviously based on one bad experience. |
IMHO, 90% of the arguments and bickering between haters and apologists would immediately vanish if everyone would agree that their anecdotal experience does not apply to ALL Koreans or ALL of Korea.
The problem is that there is and will always be a small, generally dim-witted group of people that keep insisting that their personal experiences must be absolute truths. |

Totally agree with that, Madoka. There's room for a wide variety of experiences. Many people should stop making massive generalities from their limited experiences.
On topic, I had my wisdom teeth extracted here and had great service. The place was about 10 mins from Itaewon Stn. |

Forewarned is forearmed. I wish I'd heard some of these "massive generalities" and "anecdotal experiences" before my friend's ankle was set so I could have insisted on getting him some painkillers before he had to learn the hard way.
I don't think it's unfair to say that the medical system and culture here are different from what we Westerners are probably used to. One of those differences is that doctors here are less likely to offer painkillers, so if you want them you should be prepared to ask for and insist on them. |

Unless you like pain!
First why does it take 4-5 trips to the dentist to finish a root canal.. I had one in America but it was finished in an hour.
I first time I went he gave me novacaine, the subsequent trips he said it would be done without. He has struck a nerve everytime since and the pain shot right down to my feet! I asked why no navacaine and he said that it is standard practice to not give it--besides the first time. I say it's BS.
This is the worst dental experience I've ever had.
Is this practice normal? Depriving patients novacaine for doing root canals? And to drag the whole hellish experience out for 4-5 times to complete? |
Just how many dentists have you been to in Korea? Your one bad experience means that all dentists in the ROK are bad?
I once had really, really poor service at the reception desk at my hotel in San Francisco followed my some over-billing. So never stay in a hotel in the US!
My dental experience in Korea was great. High teach, clean, friendly and reasonablyl priced. Perhaps you could have been more diligent in your search for a dentist? Referrals/testimonials?
It does seem to be common practice in Korea to have 4, 5, 6 follow-ups after a procedure. I admit that seems to be quite ridiculous. I wonder if it's a money grab. |

I didn't, that was someone else who called another an idiot back on page 1.
And for the record, my comment wasn't meant as a jab to anyone else. I also have had root canal surgery (although not in Korea) and it hurts no matter what country it is done it. The procedure itself may be made mild with local anesthesia, but the days following, the lack of real food to eat..etc sure made me wish I had been more diligent about taking care of my teeth (in particular, flossing after EVERY meal) |

I know, but you are the "he" I was referring to and not the other person since it was you that rainman was currently quoting and getting on and referring to as self righteous. |

Since root canal removes the (dead) nerve connections, you don't need anaesthetic afterwards. I've have root canal done in Korea. It takes several trips because they need to make sure no infection took place. Sounds like your American quack gave you an improper treatment and you have chosen to remember it as a good thing since the horror ended so quickly. Back to soju Dodge buddy, that's the only friend we have. |
Lol my dentist in Amerca was a "quack" because he did a PAINLESS procedure on me and finished in one day and I never had any infections or pain afterwards?
Yeah, that's the very definition of a quack.
You sir, are an idiot. |
You have chosen to remember selectively. My opinion of your American dentist or yours, is immaterial. You've made it clear from your past post that you're not happy in Korea. You are channelling your unhappiness to Korea, when Korea likes you. The Korean dentist liked to enough to treat you several times. If he didn't, he'd have refered you to somebody else. Have you ever noticed that? You're obviously liked by Koreans but you don't see it. Have a look around and see how many are disappointed because you don't see the Korean way of showing affection. |

Could not agree more.
I saw a dentist regularly while in Korea (about every 8-9 months for cleanings). I had work done twice during my time: two wisdom teeth pulled out and one filling replaced.
The wisdom teeth procedure was done at a specialist and went perfectly well.
The filling replacement was done at another dentist as my regular guy was not available and it went ok but I had to go back because that particular dentist had done a bad job. |

Hmm... more anecdotal experience.
Cool: anecdotes vs. anecdotes.
So, do you hereby agree that your "anecdotal experience does not apply to ALL Koreans or ALL of Korea"?

I had a lot of dental work done in Korea. Absolutely no complaints.
When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. Pretty much a whole new grill from the bottom up.
There are well trained professionals, in every field, in almost every country. Then there are the "not so much guys". |
