Recruiter called the tax office and was told that all foreigners pay 3.3% regardless of NPP or not.

I've always used the tax calculator....

Anyone have a telephone number (English) for NTS that can be accessed from overseas??

depends if you are at a public school or a hagwon and also if you are listed as an employee with the tax office or as an independent contractor.

If you are at a hagwon 1) your CT is telling the truth because you are listed as an ind. contractor or 2) she was told to lie to you. More info might be needed for people to help.

It's a hagwon that I'm thinking of working at. I assume I would be considered an employee since NPP is included.

I questioned the recruiter on the 3.3% and she supposedly contacted NTS and was told it was correct.

Everything I know tells me this is incorrect but it's hard for me to respond to the recruiter without definitive proof. I'm hoping a telephone call to NTS would solve the issue.

Any ideas?

Here is a number you can call from overseas to confirm if you want to, but you dont need to - your recruiter is a tool. The calculator mentioned above is what your employer should be using when estimating your taxes for withholding. If your recruiter requires proof, just give them the link to the calculator that has already been provided to you.

Thanks for that Oculis.

I sent her the link to the tax calculator and she proceeded to 'call' NTS and was told 3.3%.

Anyone know of a decent school hiring? Smile

Tell her that you're wise to that "independent contractor" act. You're an employee, not a contractor.

If the guy has a copy of the contract, he can easily look to see if it says "independent contractor". If it doesn't, he not an IC.

Seriously, I'd drop that recruiter. You shouldn't be dealing with only one recruiter anyway.

All the teachers are still being taxed according to the NTS site at the hogwan where I work. We haven't heard anything about a recent change. Income tax rates did increase with the end of the 30% exclusion for foreign workers, however our Wonjangnim checked and the NTS confirmed that it was still appropriate to use the withholding calculator at the link.

If you do call the NTS, please let us know what they say. Maybe there has been a more recent change in rates or policy.
