It's touted as the only coral-sand beach in Korea. It's true, all 100-120 meters of it that's a total clusterf#*k during the 'beach season', when we went and even then, only 20 meters or so are enjoyable, the rest is rocky as soon as you put your big toe into the water. Don't go there for the beach...
Other than that, it's pleasant enough to walk around and even stay for a night or two-- there are minbaks/hotels there and the entire island is walk-able over a couple of hours. You can rent motorbikes/bicycles/hogs (4 wheel motos) and even horses (the live kind) to go around. Almost reminded me of rural Ireland, with the green stalks of rice growing surrounded with the traditional Jeju gardens/small farms with the volcanic rock walls...
Not cheap, staying or eating, as you have to give your dinner menu around lunch time so the few restaurants/shikdangs can get the supplies during the day. Other than that, its typical packaged food (ramyen, kimbab, et al). Nice getaway, but nothing ALL that special, when said and done....Definitely NOT a primary destination (as we made it), but if already on Jeju, mind as well go over. You'll get away from the maddening crowd, that's for sure. |

I went to Udo a couple of years ago in October and really enjoyed it. The weather was fantastic but there was almost nobody there. We rented mountain bikes where you get off the ferry for pretty cheap, and cycled around most of the island. If the weather's nice, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. I think the ferry from Seongsan only takes about 15 minutes, but I don't remember what it cost. |
