Just goes to show that all the fuss was mass hysteria and anti-Americanism.

It was more about a Korean program with the clout of a 20/20 or 60 Minutes doing an in-depth story on the dangers of US beef, fabricating stories about humans contracting the disease in the US, showing footage of "downer calves" and basically drumming up hysterical protest against the 한미FTA and 2MB's administration as a whole.

Now they're saying that this is a natural occurrence of the disease and not something that came from eating feed. Basically they're saying there's nothing to see here.

It should be interesting to see how the media here pick up on that.

I can't remember the last time I bought beef in Korea. Anything reasonably priced is as much fat as meat, and the good cuts just keep going up in price.

The opposition party is having a field day with this. What a great chance to push your political agenda.

I have no qualms with Hanwoo. It tastes just fine. I think some people, and keep in mind that I'm American, get a little too nationalistic about things like beef. That's particularly true in the case of Hanwoo, and in many cases true with a portion of Americans who seem to constantly be on the defensive here.

Regarding lower quality imported beef at Lottemart, etc., I find that you need to request specific fresh cuts from the butcher to get anything halfway decent from the US or Australia. The pre-packaged stuff they have out is generally not what would be considered "steak" anyway.

I heard from a fairly reliable source that the standard for Hanwoo was "raised in Korea for 6 months or more." So a cow that was born and raised in the US or Argentina or Australia for 2 years and came to Korea for 6 months before slaughter is considered "hanwoo." And there's always the possibility that the beef they sell as hanwoo might not even be hanwoo in the first place. Fraudulent labeling happens all over this country.

Plenty of people think they've been eating Korean beef and they've been eating American beef at Korean beef prices. The stupid system creates the profit for fraud all over Korea.

This is why I only eat imported beef. There's just about no incentive for fraud. I guess they could import from China, but given that the US has just about the cheapest beef in the world, I don't see why the importers would.
