So, I am new to this forum, but I would like to get a job starting in Jan2013. I ran across this school's website and it looks pretty great. Has anyone here ever worked for this company or have any information about them? Here's their website: http://www.ybmecc.co.kr/ |

Since your new, you will be forgiven. You just asked a question that would be akin to
I went to a nice fast food resturant today named McDonald's. Has anybody heard of it! The food was pretty good.
YBM/ECC is a big school chain. Most of the Korean cities will have a couple. Some are good, some are bad. Each school is different. Some schools will be a franchise, while others might be head office run.
Read a bit more of the forums. Read the FAQs for some more info.
Also when posting questions try to give a bit more detail like which city or type of job it is!
Also try searching the forums a bit too!

Basic rules (as skippy covered in part already):
YBM ECC is one of the largest ESL Companies in Korea so you need to follow certain guidelines. I worked at one of these schools way back when I arrived in Korea.
1- Avoid franchises. These schools are run by indivuals that pay to have the name ECC on their school and that leads to a vast differences in conditions. While this may be beneficial in some schools, as a complete newbie you should not take that chance.
2- ECC typically pays a bit less and requires a bit more in terms of hours but conversely offers several advantages for inexperienced new teachers. These are:
I- Stable curriculum that is fairly well organized
II- Standardized contracts that are honoured. (ie you get what is in your con tract).
III- Always paid on time
I would say ECC is a decent place to start as an inexperienced ESL teacher.
If you get an offer, it is easy to go on the ECC website and see what the particular school looks like. Typically you get to see pictures of the school and a description of the location. This will be corporate written but still it can be a good start. Then you need to contact teachers that work there.
Avoid putting too much credence in the long list of blacklist sites because the majority of these sites are akin to the bar rumour mill: packed to the gills with unverified, one sided accounts of how "bad" a school is. Far better to form an informed opinion by speaking to people at the particular school and to accept that any move abroad will inevitably come with its share of uncertainty.
If you get offers from ECC schools in Busan, feel free to PM me as I lived in Busan for 11 years. Good luck. |

Is there any way to determine which locations are company-owned and which ones are franchise-owned? The website does not make that distinction in there location descriptions. |

Unless they changed their policies what you find on their site are the company owned schools. You could contact their HR/Recruitment division and ask that very question however. |

Since you are planning so far ahead - will work to your benefit. With this gumption you can do much better then ECC/YBM. Good starter school for beginners. But beginners who do a min or so of a month of planning and getting here.
Once again read the boards. Find some blogs. Get a lay of the land.
8 months of so and you could go be rocking with a pretty good job.
Have questions, then post, em. Just ask smart questions.
Good Luck! |

I checked out their website and location but saw no Jeju location on their map or any info about it online. Does anyone know anything about this particular school? Any info much appreciated |

I work for YBM in Gangjin I love it. They have positions opening next month and in August (i Think). Money's great , work hrs. are better. The only downside is if you dont like living in a small town but you are only an 1 hr away from Mokpo & 1:15 from Gwangju. |
