I always change the locks when I move into a new place.

Definitely change the lock. You'll know very quickly whether or not your boss has a key.

Something else to consider. Some hogwon owners live in an apartment in the same building as the school, AND the teacher's apartment is also in the same building. In that case they'll definitely know that your gf is staying with you.

Personally, I'd just tell them that she's going to be staying with you. If you want, say that she's looking for work in town. Unless it's an ultra-christian school then they won't care. A PS probably WILL care but hogwon owners won't.

Is it surprising that people change the locks?

Aside from whether or not your boss has a copy of the key and whether he may or may not use it while you're not around, there's also a very good chance that other people have lived in that apartment before you and still have a key.

i wouldn't move into a Korean place with an old style key lock - i only like new builds - so i DO change the code when i move in (hardly difficult) but depending on the situation I may change the keys too in an older place! I allow my apt owner to go in an do stuff while I am at work like let the gas and cable man in or do some repairs if needed, but after the work is done I change the number as while i TRUST my owner adjumma, i don't trust the workmen and I KNOW she has given them the codes before.

There are ways to override those electronic locks without the need to know your code.
