i wanted to stop in korea on my way home from china (maybe 3 days max) and as a canadian i know i can receive up to 6mths entry in south korea. however, my passport will expire in october (less than 6mths validity from date of entry).

would this be a problem to immigration, even if i show them an outbound ticket?

thanks

I'm not entirely certain, but on the HiKorea FAQs page it would seem that you should be okay (click on the "The Term of Validity of a Passport and Departure" which should be second from the bottom on the list, and Canada is in the last group of countries)
Would probably be a good idea to contact immigration directly and verify this.

5 and a bit months left and onward passage makes you a transit passenger on his way home.

It shouldn't be a problem BUT it is less than required so it is up to the discretion of immigration (not likely to be an issue)
and
the interpretation of the boarding agent in China who very well make it an issue (they tend to not be very flexible since they get hit with the fines and costs if there is a problem).
