The US Army will no longer broadcast its signal over the air (channel 34 in the greater Seoul area) after tomorrow...... They are going to an all digital format (will need a dish and decoder box)..... Good bye AFN TV!

Some cable companies have been stealing it for some time. There was an attempt to keep the cable companies from this a few years ago, but of course, it failed.

Personally, I can do without the stupid "you're fat, but you're still gorgeous" womens opinion shows showcasing celebrities with wrinkles as deep as the grand canyon. Ditto to their choices of games and whatnot we get to see. Used to miss the TV shows, but with the internet, I no longer do.

Don't see the big deal. I've lived without it for quite a few years.

Find free torrents of your favorite shows and links to live sport cappers.

That's all you need. The only shows I watch on Korean TV are the national news networks (in Korean) and the KPop chart shows.

A sad day indeed for us longtimers. Yeah its been close to 4 years since I've really seen it when my cable carried it but man the memories. The silly PSA's (anybody remember such classics like "where's Jan?", "who's that lady?" sexual harrassment amongst others). Coming to Seoul from the hinterlands on the weekends to hole up in a hotel to watch American TV. Jeopardy at 5:30P, Tuesday Night Football. In the pre-torrent/high speed/live stream eras AFN was your only chance for any American TV. Since I do get on base on occasion I do and will continue to get to see it but its a shell of what it used to be

Like the Red Door in Itaweon, its time has passed but it still marks an end of an era for expats in Korea.

I still lament the day i came home from work and AFN was gone. I even dug the PSAs. It was fun spotting the 'actors' around Itaewon.

When I first got here in 1993, AFN was like crack. I was stationed in Cheju, and as far as I can recall, we couldn't get the signal...or was it I didn't have a tv?!

I do remember, however, going to Seoul on the weekends and shacking up in a hotel all weekend glued to AFN.

Those were the days you young wipper snappers!!

Great Posts! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

One thing Korea has really taught me is to appreciate the small things in life, such as "Tuesday" Night Football and international beer in a grocery store. You don't really know how valuable something is until you don't have it (and even learned to live without it).

There used to be whole threads on Dave's about the inaneness of the PSAs on AF(K)N but to me they were all part of the experience and at least it gave you something to talk about.

Gawd I'm old!

How could you leave out the Anthrax Ninja?

Yes, for longtimers there are many great AFN memories. I still remember my shock and dismay when I came home from work a few days ago and it was gone.

Back in 2003, AFN was the source of all the western TV I got to see! I lived in Gunsan, so we got it because of the Air Force base there. America's Next Top Model Wednesdays and movie night Thursday were big social events!! Ah, the memories.
