I agree with you. How does Wonderland even continue to recruit foreigners? They haven't changed their name, and people continue to write bad things about them.

That one girl even wrote a book about it. I'd never read it though because I can always come here if I want to read about people whining about their jobs.

...because there's a lot of stupid foriegners out there.

A lot of people do literally zero research before finding a job. One of my former coworkers signed at Poly then after the fact was asking people on Facebook what the working conditions were like.

Wow, that's awful that somebody would be in Korea already and still work at Poly. I used to work in the same building as a CDI that was across the street from a Poly, and when the times were tough, my coworkers and I would joke around about how we at least weren't those guys.

OP's probably making this up anyway. I think parents would freak out if foreigners were changing their babies' diapers. What respectable mother would want some great white pedophile wiping off her baby's bunghole?

Maybe the parents were given the impression it would be Korean staff who would be doing the diaper changes. Wonderland has a lot of Korean staff, and they're all females. Wonderland doing a bait and switch with the dirty work being sloughed off onto foreign personnel would pretty much be par for the course. I don't know all of the details and didn't stick and I didn't stick around long enough to find out.

Eh, I have another buddy there who went there with two years experience, but he did his research and knew what he was getting into. They really do offer higher wages than pretty much anywhere else for someone with no qualifications and nothing else about them that makes them interesting. Personally, I don't think the wages are worth the extra work, but my friend who did his research made a conscious choice to pursue top dollar, even if it put him in a crappy situation.

I think any parents in general would be uncomfortable with a man, especially some 25 year old fresh out of college type, changing their baby's diaper. I don't think they'd care if it was a foreign female.

It's more about gender roles and stuff. People would get over it, but like a female mechanic, even the most enlightened might pause for a second when they see it.

Seriously, if you took your car in and some Korean, princessy looking girl bubbled up and said she'd work on your car, wouldn't you have serious doubts?

But who knows, she might be the Mona Lisa Vito of Korea.

That being said, add Wonderland to the list of places to never work for or trust in any way, shape, or form. OP was right to get the heck outta there.

Changing diapers is not THAT distressing, but its certainly extra duty that demands extra money, and given all that goes into it, like I said, that should work out to at least 50,000 won a diaper.

I'm guessing there were other issues with the Hagwon and the OP and that this was more a catalyst for them, but given what I'm hearing about Wonderland, I can more than guess who was the cause of those issues. Boogie? Try Buggin Out.

Reggie,

Good for you for standing up for yourself.

I hope you find a much better new position quickly and get the money you're owed.

Good luck.

Thanks.

Instead of going to the Labor Board, I'm working at my cousin's logging business during the summer. My E-2 work visa began on August 12, 2011 and expires on September 12th, 2012. If I apply for a new job in Korea, I'm assuming I'll need to put my date of availability as September 13th at the earliest. Correct?

Sorry if I've been skeptical. Your story is pretty ridiculous, especially the part about using your vasectomy as justification for not changing diapers and quitting. I reckon being absurd doesn't discredit it though. I've found myself in some far-fetched circumstances while working at a crappy place before, so I shouldn't be so judgmental. I hope everything works out well for you.

You'd probably be amazed by how many men are willing to get their scrotums cut open with a scalpel and reproductive parts severed with a blade in order to prevent having to deal with many of the responsibilities of having children.

When men are willing to go to such an extreme to get out of the responsibilities relating to our own potential offspring, clearly we don't want to clean up the poop of the offspring of random strangers. I'm assuming you haven't had a vasectomy.

My former employer agrees with you and thought I was being absurd, but the feeling was mutual. It was definitely an impasse.

Thanks for the good wishes.

You are aware that "working at a logging business" isn't covered by the E-2 visa, are you not? And, yes, those with ethnic Koreans can work at other jobs besides teaching English, provided they are here on the appropriate visa. Again, E-2 is not the appropriate visa for employment at your cousin's.

Question

I assume he meant he was going home to work on said logging business, maybe I'm wrong though.

You're right.

If I return in late September, is it too late to pursue the apartment deposit or will it be too late to go to the labor board?

I don't think it's absurd that you don't want to change diapers. I just think it's funny that you brought up having a vasectomy and that your whole situation is absurd. Having to touch poop would be reason enough to me.
