Does anyone know about the job conditions at Keimyung University? I was offered an interview, but they have not told me about the pay, vacation and housing.

This is an emerging trend now with uni jobs - they are beginning to avoid showing the salary etc. Perhaps it is to weed out those only in it for those reasons i.e. not interested in the teaching...

What people do now is have a nice day out, do the interview, have a good look around the campus and then wait for them to make you an offer.

When/if they do, THEN you can ask all your questions before giving your acceptance. Remember you don't have to take it! One normally also requests an email address or two of teachers who currently work there as 'foreigners' tend not to screw each other over.

I have known people from Keimyung who have been there for a long time and my understanding is that it's not bad at all - but I seem to remember that the pay doesn't rise much if at all year on year - so that would be a good question to ask...

In short, all those tricky and potentially atmosphere-altering questions should not be asked at the recruitment interview but afterward when they actually make you an offer.

To do otherwise can be a waste of time if they are not going to offer you the job and can potentially make you look less interested in the work than in the conditions of employment.

Bogus. I would definately be asking about salary, holidays, and other things in the interview or if not shortly after. It is not upto other teachers there to tell me what I will be offered in my opinion. It is in my opinion a professional question to politely ask what the university is offering by way of salary and vacation times since you are right many are vague about this and it is so important to us as staff.

Maybe I'm like old-school or something, but I find it really annoying when unis don't post job conditions on their ads. It's kind of standard in the ESL industry to do so. Other industries like business or whatever, I can understand why they don't.

It's so annoying in fact, that I will rarely apply for these jobs (especially if not in Seoul). And, I don't think I would waste (?) my money taking the train and whatever for an interview without knowing beforehand the working conditions.

I think they try to convince themselves that by withholding salary and hours information, they will only attract prospective teachers who are in it for the education, not (gasp!) the money or vacation time.

When in reality, you'll be attracting teachers so desperate for a job, they'll apply for anything.

Not posting job conditions is simply unprofessional in this industry, and quite condescending, the attitude that foreign esl teachers don't have the ambition or desire to actually make a decent living from doing the job and will take whatever they can get.

Hah, yeah apparently you have to have 25 posts. I don't post here often but I would like to hear how Keimyung is handling the hiring process this semester. I should be able to answer any questions you have and give you a bit of inside information.

I don't want to write about what is happening at Keimyung publicly on the forum just yet but I will talk with you through email.
