I'm not defending the "door slammers," but I noticed with my own apartment it depends on the window being open or closed. If the window is open, for example, without me even pulling the door closed, it slams shut loudly. If the window is closed, sometimes it doesn't even shut all the away enough for the auto-lock to work. I'm not sure if your building is like this, but its a possibility maybe?

So you just let it slam? My door is the same, and I close it so it doesn't slam.

I hate the noise!! My neighbors upstairs are chronic furniture shovers, door slammers, and stair stompers. Fricking hate them!! They also enjoy blocking the whole lane with their four cars and looking indignant when I call them down to move the cars so that I can get mine out to go to work. Might start keying their cars once for every time they piss me off. Either that or steal their yapping purple-dyed eared dog.

But beware, people can just easily ignore it. People smoked so much in the bathroom stalls where I work that the building owner actually put a sign in every bathroom that said, "Smoking indoors is against regulations, but if you're going to smoke please at least have the decency to not spit and toss your cigarettes on the floor!"

12 years in Korea. No earplugs ever.

Door slammers are a minor nuisance. As for other noises...many times it can be handled by a little bit of not so subtle diplomacy.

Last night for instance someone was screaming at intervals in the apartment above mine. Not continuously but at every 5-10 minutes. He'd scream 3-4 times and then be quiet only to scream a few minutes later. It sounded like someone was in pain...but I couldn't hear anything except the screams. Finally I got out of bed, got dressed, went upstairs and just stood there in the hallway for a few minutes (wanted to make sure I had the right one.) The screams came again and I knocked on the door.

No answer. So I knocked again. (the following conversation took place in Korean but transcribed here for my readers' comfort.)

A voice reached me through the door.

Disembodied Voice: "Who is it?"

TUM: " Stop screaming you moron!"

DV: "Sorry sorry."

TUM: I come here again? You will be!"

Then I went back downstairs put the PJs back on and climbed into bed. Blissful silence ensued.

Doesn't flow that well in English.

While I'm glad this worked for you, it could have (and has) easily flowed in a different direction. You go upstairs, knock, yell - the (already angry) neighbour comes out, confrontation ensues.

Of course, it depends on so many factors... but I think it happens more often than we realize. One of my friends went through a similar confrontation a month or so ago... and the Security Guard confided in him that the Apt complex had a number of criminal and civil suits on the go at the time - from neighbours fighting each other.

Possible but far more probable where foreigners are thick on the ground and you are used to seeing them. I'm in a rural town where I am one of two foreigners (the other one works at the middle school) and everyone knows everyone else. If someone comes out mad but expecting to see a fellow Korean and encounters an equally enraged foreigner twice his size...(a rarity where I live) I've no doubt that would give him some pause.

Plus Korea being a shame-based society...if you realize you are making an nuisance of yourself to the neighbors you are very unlikely to continue on...if you live there and will be doing so for the foreseeable future.

Add to that if he attempted to get physical I'd just walk away and call the cops. And press charges. Also complain formally to neighbor's boss. Said neighbor should realize fairly quickly that this is a lose-lose game and should keep his mouth shut from then on in. There's simply no excuse for howling like a wolf at 3 AM unless you are mortally injured. Nor was I the only one annoyed.

Yeah a face to face confrontation isn't ALWAYS the best way to handle it...but sometimes it is the only way...particularly if OTHER neighbors are knocking on the walls to get him to shut up.
