For all you coffee drinkers:

Starbucks Korea to raise coffee prices
2012-05-03

Starbucks Coffee Korea said it would raise its prices of 32 kinds of coffee by 300 won starting Monday.

The 32 items include Americano, cafe latte, caramel macchiato, espresso, green tea latte and mocha frappuccino.

With the increased prices, a tall Americano will cost 3,900 won, tall caf latte 4,400 won and a tall caramel macchiato, 5,400 won.

The prices of 10 other coffees, including espresso double shot and caramel caf mocha, will remain unchanged, while four other drinks including lavendar Earl Grey will go down by 100-200 won.

The company attributed the price hikes to increased costs of raw materials including milk and coffee beans.

I doubt any of that extra money will go to coffee growers in the developing world.

I think a lot of people have adjusted to just buy the cheapest coffee they can for the time these days. That's part of it, I imagine. Raise the prices on the cheaper stuff.

I find that a lot of the Korean chains are far worse offenders, but it looks better to print a story about a foreign chain, I guess.

Anyone know the story behind why Coffee Bean failed in Itaewon? I imagine the location was too pricey?

Insane that a cup of coffee made from a few berries costs more than a meal with rice and side dishes.

Busan is awesome in that there are lots of independant small stores doing 1k americanos most times of the day as loss leaders.

A lot of people don't know this, but prices at Starbucks Korea are set by Shinsegae, not Starbucks USA.

frankly I think from a business standpoint they should raise the price.

Seriously, everyone knows starbucks is not about coffee..but rather image, atmosphere, and fitting in. If the general starbucks customer is willing to pay that much for a drink (most of whom are not drinking anything that would be considered coffee), then yeah..they are doing it not for the product but the invisible appeal that as sad as it may seem, coming with sitting in starbucks, meeting at starbucks, doing the language exchange/hookup meeting, walking around with a take out starbucks cup...etc.

So if i were them, then yeah I would also raise prices, and continue to raise them as long as people are still willing to pay that price.

How exactly does a double espresso go down in price and an americano go up?
Whatever, you can get a better cup of coffee at many smaller chains or independent shops for 3k and less.

They had said earlier they were going to have to raise prices because so many customers were camping out in their shops for hours and hours while buying just one beverage. Their sales have gone down because potential customers see there are no seats an go to another coffee shop.

Tt seems to be the cool thing to study in a Starbucks these days.

I wish more people would boycott Starbucks. On Saturdays and Sundays the lines are often out the door.

It's not just Koreans. Walk into either of the Starbucks in Itaewon and often you'll see some snooty loser pretending to read a book with big words just to impress others.

Believe it or not, a lot of those people reading books are actually reading. Confused

When did Starbucks become a library?
