How did you get out of that one exactly?

I didn't exactly get out of it. I had to pay a fine to the DA's office for a violence charge as anyone would. The *beep* in question saw none of that money. And I just refrained from any baited aggression thereafter towards the dude, cause I knew that was what he wanted. |

I remember reading somewhere that talking loudly after dark was a custom to scare away tigers and evil spirits. |
I used to do that as a child. Really worked wonders. |

So I put up the signs asking residents to close the doors quietly. At first it seemed to be working, then increasingly as the evening wore on the thundering door slamming recommenced. This morning I was awakened several times just after 5am by incredibly loud door slamming. At friggin 5am. It's like I'm dealing with adult children. In class my students think that my 'stop talking' only applies to the immediate present. They can resume talking twenty seconds later. I think the signs I put up are having a similar effect on my adult neighbors. "What?" I can hear them say. "I read the sign and closed the door quietly after reading it. I did what was asked of me then resumed my regular habits. What? What?"
It's like dealing with mildly retarded children. |

| I had this situation and the sign worked for a while. When it resumed I got a long loop of an angry dog barking from youtube and played it at full volume, returning hours later. I think the message sunk in after that. |

| Try taping the message to each door? Would be even better if you could put their names on it (check mailboxes). People tend to think that a general message is not meant for them, but directly addressing them might change their attitudes. If it doesn't work, do the dog-barking loop thing. |

That's a good point. Koreans often don't think that a "No Smoking" sign applies to them. After all, it doesn't have their name on it. And they have no moral obligation to the person who made the law or put up the sign. They're not in my social bubble. I owe them nothing. And that red light surely doesn't apply to me. I don't even like red. Motorbikes are now banned on side walks? Surely that doesn't apply to me. But yeah, maybe making it personal to them by attaching their name might help.
Who the hell knows. I'll try anything at this point. |
