Hopefully no one will say the COEX. Have some friends visiting and was wondering where to spend a day/afternoon to do a bit of shopping and site seeing. Any recommendations? Thanks.

What type of shopping?

Dongdaemun/Myeongdong/Namdaemun/Insadong all have shopping and are near all of the palaces.

Myeongdong/Namdaemun, Gyeongbuk Palace and Insadong are within walking distance of each other. There are also many buses between the places if you don't feel like walking.

Dongdaemun is on the same subway line as Insadong and Seoul Station.

I suppose mostly clothing or Korean souvenirs. Thanks for the recommendations.

Dongdaemun: clothing
Namdaemun/Myeongdong: souvenirs
Insadong is nice for souvenirs too but you can find most of the same things cheaper in Myeongdong. I would still recommend going to Insadong though.

The Jogjesa temple is near Insadong and is definitely worth seeing as well. You can start with Gyeongbuk Palace, walk to the temple (10 minutes), walk to Insadong (5 minutes), then you can either take the subway to Dongdaemun or a bus to Meongdong/Namdaemun market.

One palace is probably enough.
