They have to close two days per month, but it does not mandate that they close on Sundays. They can close any two days in the entire month.

This is not the first time that the mom and pops are making noise. Last year I think E-Mart or Homeplus started selling pizza and fried chicken for less than half the price you could buy it anywhere else. The people lined up for hours to buy this stuff. The mom and pop pizza and chicken restaurants complained and so E-Mart and Homeplus voluntarily stopped selling the pizza and chicken.

Emart still sells the chicken and pizza. No idea what you're talking about.

It's also the mom and pop pharmacies who were complaining that convenient stores would be allowed to sell aspirin and cough medicine. The mom and pops have a lot of clout here.

It was Lotte Mart, and they were selling it for something like 6,000 won, less than half anywhere else was selling the same quantity of chicken for. There were lots of customers, but even Blue House officials were saying that Lotte Mart was being "uncompetitive" by selling chicken so cheap. Lotte Mart finally broke from the pressure and raised their prices.

M&P stores should encourage customers to shop there by being friendly. There's a bakery I go to a couple of times a week purely because the staff there are so nice. I go out of my way to shop there and wouldn't buy bread from anywhere else. On the other hand there was the M&P corner shop I used to go to for cigs run by an old couple. The woman was friendly enough despite never, ever remembering my brand of cigarettes. The guy was a rude SOB. Both were incredibly slow. I found my excuse to stop going when I saw the old guy fighting on the street (nothing wrong with that) but then he hit his wife when she tried to pull him away. It would have been awkward to go back

Closing Emart every two weeks won't change my spending habits but M&P store shop assistants smiling and saying 'hi' sometimes might. I get a grim satisfaction from going out of my way to avoid certain petrol stations and corner shops

Seeing "mom and pop stores" made me check youtube for John Key referring to "kiwi mums and dads" over and over. No results though Sad

They can be very rude. Many Koreans also complain about their rudeness.

It was Lottemart that offered the fried chicken at the lower price and it became a big stoopidathon as some Korean consumers and netizens actually protested in favor of higher prices. They got their wish. Lottemart still sells the fried chicken but at a higher price.

All of them, Lottemart, EMart, and Homeplus, continue to offer the cheap pizzas but that's about competition with Costco pizza. Costco may only have a few locations in all of Korea but some of Costco's products, prices, and consumer-friendly strategies are positively influencing Korean marketplaces.

As far as pizza goes, I welcome the competition. Pizza's been overpriced for decades in this country. Dominos sells what would cost $10 stateside for like $25. For the simple reason that it's an American brand. I used to never eat at Domino's unless they were selling 3 mediums for $15.

Something tells me that the big boys have secretly backed this because they know that this will just mean they are busier on Saturdays and Mondays and can reduce operating costs.

As an aside, for all those people who are so anti-mom & pop and are all about the bottom line. They should start getting Wal-Mart-esqe ESL operations going. Preferably stocked with either cheap Filipinos or Indians toiling out to room after room of 5-10 students for that individual touch, or featuring NETs conducting classes to auditoriums of hundreds. All for a much cheaper price than Korean consumers are forced to pay now for their hagwon lessons.

If hakwon owners could get away with this, they already would be doing it. Parents want their kids to meet westerners to both learn English and to get exposed to the culture somewhat.

It's a dumb law that has no effect. Many mom and pop marts are not competitive. Luckily, there is one near me that isn't too bad for the basics and reasonably prices. They even sell the odd foreign product. These guys are probably a rare exception. But, they are located near a richer area in my mid sized city. I do pop into them every once in a while for the convenience sake. Though the big "marts" have more selection, of course.

Most are now closed every other Wednesday as a compromise, they complained that they lost too much money being closed every other Sunday so they agreeded on Wednesdays since they are slower

still a stupid law

You resurrect a thread from almost 12 months ago to ask if a mini supermarket will be open tomorrow? Confused

Yes. I have to work all weekend and have nothing better to do than post on Dave's regarding my grocery buying schedule. Cool

It's confusing. They used to be closed one Sunday per month, but now they say now they are open every Sunday.

Saranghaeyo LotteMySuper!
