I work at 3 public schools per my contract and when asked if I'd like to stay, there was no sense of impending doom. I like my schools and such. They have been paying my correct salary, rent and bonuses, good people, etc.
My question has to do with asking about a raise. I wasn't given a new contract to sign. If they do make up a new contract, how can I ask for a raise? How much more do people normally ask for during the 2nd year? My contract does state that 100,000 (at least) is going to be added to the pay. I would like a bit more than that.

If you want more than that, then ask for more. Only you know what you're time is worth.
How much are you earning now? If they gave you a good starting salary, then they aren't likely to give you much of a raise.
By the way, if you are "resigning" then you won't get any raise. So it's better for you to "re-sign" if you want that bonus. |

Public schools are not exactly hagwons - negotiations of any sort are set at minimum. In regards to re-signing, your current contract should include all of the necessary info relevant to re-signing. Usually, public school contracts state that a teacher that re-signs gets an extra two weeks of paid vacation, a round trip back to his/her country and a 100,000W/month raise. |

Which organization does that? SMOE?
I ask because according to what I've read/experienced neither GEPIK nor EPIK offer a round trip or an automatic raise.
They do offer a 2 million renewal bonus along with the 2 weeks of airfare though.
Here are the links if you are interested.

In regards to the OP if your contract says 100,000 won then that's what you are getting...the school has no authority to change the rate unless you were hired directly by them. |

maximmm: That's what my contract says. I was just curious about whether or not it was common practice for them to negotiate.
TheUrbanMyth: Maybe it's not included with those organizations? My contract says I'm an employee of my school. It seems it's not a GEPIK/EPIK/SMOE because there is no mention of them in the contract.
Well there shouldn't be any harm in asking for an extra hundred. I'm grateful for the responses. That way if it's a no go I won't feel bad. |
