Here are a few fun facts:
  1. Your score on the open class is part of your renewal application.
  2. Some of the people scoring you cannot speak, let alone understand, English.
  3. Part of your score for the open class is the total of the student survey.
    1. The student survey may include questions that have absolutely nothing to do with you or your teaching.
    2. The student survey is from one class and one class only, the class selected for the open class.
    3. The last open class I had to do, the student survey had the following questions:
      • It is helpful to have a Native English speaking teacher.
      • It gives me confidence in English to study with a native English speaking teacher.
      • Having a native English speaking teacher helps me to gain a wider understanding of foreign cultures.
      • The native English speaking teacher is interesting and easy to understand.
      • I am in favor of having lessons with a native English speaking teacher.
      • Educational activities with the native English speaking teacher (lessons, after-school programs, school events) helps to improve my English skills.

  4. Although the open class is supposed to be an evaluation, you are not informed of what the evaluation items are. Just for fun, here they are. You are judged on three areas: Lesson Design (25 points), Professionalism (65 points), and Student Activity (10 points). These are broken down as follows:
    1. Lesson Design
      • Learning Objectives
        • Are the learning objectives and principles clearly stated in the lesson plan?
        • Are the students made aware of the learning goals?

      • Lesson Plan
        • Does the plan match the course content and teaching-learning process?
        • The entire process of learning is structured in order to reach the learning objectives, and the adequate amount of classes? (Note: you will notice that this is not really in your control as each unit of the textbook is slated to be covered in eight class sessions, for only two of which are you responsible.)
        • Did the execution of the lesson plan reflect central concepts and principles of curriculum design?

    2. Professionalism
      • Motivation
        • Did the new learning activities reflect the students' background knowledge and motivate the students to learn?
        • Does the entire process satisfy the students' curiosity in the learning activity?

      • Teacher's Remarks
        • Does the teacher use various levels of expression to promote the students' thinking?
        • Are all the teacher's comments during the class appropriate (intonation, volume, etc.)

      • Use of Technology and Teaching Methods
        • Are the students are induced into participating in the learning activities?
        • Are the students' abilities, interests, and needs recognized and the students rewarded as appropriate for their actions?
        • Is there much teacher-student interaction?
        • Did the overall classroom learning objectives and content meet the needs of students with diverse characteristics by using appropriate teaching strategies?
        • Is the learning content based on the students' understanding and is the "full<->small group" tutoring approach applied flexibly?
        • Does the teacher check the students' understanding in a timely manner provide concrete feedback?

      • Utilization Data
        • Are materials provided to reach the teaching and learning goals?
        • Was there a sufficient and efficient use of audiovisual material, writing, and a variety of instructional materials?

      • Formative Assessment
        • Were the learning goals and assessment methods and their content appropriate?

    3. Student Activity
      • Student Speaking
        • Did the students express their opinions openly and freely?

      • Student Participation
        • Were the students actively involved in performing a variety of learning activities and assignments?

  5. Each item is scored from 1 to 5, and there is a total possible of 100 points per observer (except that there will never be an NET completing one of these forms).

In addition to being reviewed in a basically meaningless manner (the open class), trying to do something actually educational, interactive etc is almost always met with resistance. I'm not talking about 10700 y/o teachers either. Fresh out of University.

I actually put in as many work hours as a friend of mine who's in a Hogwon and for less money. I've got more experience.

Hey guys,if someone is not being renewed in their school district,will it come back to haunt them when they apply to another public school district?Is it even possible that they will let you work in another school district is you are given a low score on the evaluation in a school district?

Ever bombed? No. Prepare to succeed.
Ramifications? Not being rehired?
Processes? You might have less kudos to take the lead in the classroom or get your way in any academic decisions in your case but since you're not staying around after this contract, don't sweat it one bit. Don't forget to turn on the fans or even the AC if u have one!

I highly doubt other schools would know. The main thing is if you worked the year, and that is more of a recruiter issue so they don't have to get another teacher. The schools you interview with don't care.

If you are a teacher finishing a year at school 1, and school 2 wants to hire a teacher, why would they care if school 1 wanted you for a second year or not? That's not how the interview process goes.

Thanks. I'm asking because a reputable recruiter told me that they will not work with me because of this.Even if I got him reference letters he still would'nt work with me.I asked them if other districts check with your previous district,and he said "Of course".He told me I should try hagwons.He just did not want to work with me.It could also be that he only wants the best applicants to apply for district since his company might have good relations with them,but Im not too sure if this is the reason.The impression he gave me was that the schools check up with the offices of education as a reference,and if you did not do well in the evaluation,theres no hope.Thanks for responses.

Go with another recruiter.

I've had an opportunity to observe a human tape recorder open class. The Korean co-teacher ran the entire show and the guy was left standing smiling and grinning the whole time dressed in suit. Then came the listen and repeat part which only lasted for a couple of minutes and went back to smilin' and grinnin'.

Later, I found out that this guy has been teaching for several years here. Shocked


Korean co teacher might have told him to do that. Some let us teach, while others tell us to be a human tape recorder. I mostly have freedom with my own teaching. Can't blame the guy for the Korean teacher who arranged it that way.
