Those jobs aren't easy to come by...at least not with our credentials. |

This ranges from $30,657 to $54,476. All salaries are paid in USD, however the School reserves the right to pay up to 15% in local currency
A lot of international school pay 50,000+ with 15+ yrs experience. I love the blanket statements. |

I currently work at an international school in Seoul. All teachers make 4 million a month or more. 4 million is the lowest salary (new teacher/less experience).
If you don't want to do this kind of work right now, I understand, but don't take a job that pays 2.1-2.5. Also, I've heard that CDI work their staff to the bone.
Be careful what you sign yourself up for. |

As always a job is about a heck of a lot more than just salary right?
If the OP is fine with 2.1 (that is a bit low) to 2.5 for lower hours and fewer duties than in an international school, then that will work for him no?
Heck I've known qualified and experienced Teachers who came to Korea and prefered the Hakwon setting to the PS or International School setting. It is really a matter of what you want and what you are looking for.
For example a 2-8 schedule is damn attractive to some people.....even if the pay is a bit lower than at the International school that offers 4M+ but for a full on schedule.
I became friends with a woman in Busan in the mid-2000s. She was a certified teacher from the US, had worked a few years full time as a High School teacher in the US. She came to Korea and signed up for a Hakwon. Then on year two of what ended up being a longer stay (she may still be there) she got an offer from an I.S. in Seoul. Pay was much like what was just outlined. She was happy enough to sign but did only one year of her 2 year contract and was back to Hakwons. She found that the I.S. put her back in the same grind she had in the US: long hours (teaching + grading + afterschool clubs she had to run + parents)....the shoe does not fit everyone! |

And it's not as if there aren't any good hagwons that want certified teachers and will treat them well as a result, which a lot of people seem to miss. |

If I were you two, I'd be looking for even more money. A fair bit of experience PLUS you are both certified.
You are being extremely reasonable. |

They are being reasonable but also have specific preferences...namely shorter hours. Can't have it all right? |

I think they have a lot to offer (assuming they are solid teachers). I wouldn't think it would be that hard to get two positions paying 2.5 each, with 6 hour days.
If money is not their preference, then they should be able to find two positions with 4 hours days for 2.1~2.3 a month.
They key is their degree: they are certified. That sets them apart from the rest. |

| Actually it's better if you don't work at the same hogwon. One of you can ask for the apartment and the other can ask for a housing allowance. Split the housing allowance and you'll earn a bit more. |
Plus it would be near-impossible to vacation together if both of you are at the same hogwon, even if it's a large one. |
Damn. I never even thought of vacation. Thanks!
UPDATE: We did get an offer for a position in Seoul. 2:30 to 8:30, 2.3. Starts August 20th. However, the neighborhood doesn't seem all that happening.
Nos vemos... |
To get into Seoul, don't be picky about location. Be picky about the job, but never location. (Maybe apartment though.) |

This is quite true. I prefer my job over a hakwon for reasons other than just salary. For instance I really enjoy having a 190 day working year as opposed to just 10 days vacation + national holidays (which you may lose if they fall on non-working days). To each their own, I suppose. |

Your sarcasm aside, a job IS about more than pay.
It can be about benefits, hours, location, who you teach, scheduling, hours, work environment.....
Some people prefer the Hakwon environment vs the Public School environment because of the smaller class sizes and the freedom to teach their own class. Others prefer the PS position because of the stability and often the vacation time.
Some will prefer the higher pay, no matter what, as long as the job is challenging enough.
Reducing it to pay is stupid in my opinion, especially in this case when the OP specifically mentionned the want shorter hours and a 2-8 shedule or something like it....
We all have different preferences when it comes to work. For me, a job at this point is about a heck of a lot more than raw salary. Conditions are a huge deal as is schedule flexibility as I have two kids. In my case, benefits would trump pay as well (dental insurance for example).
All this being said, the OP and hos gf are actually qualified and experience so I am sure they can find a good Hakwon position with a 2-8 schedule M-F for something around 2.5M. |
