Help!

I have been with the same public school on the same E-2 visa since 2010 and my contract is up in July. My school and I mutually agreed that I would renew my contract for another year.

When I got my visa in 2010 I applied from within Korea with a criminal record check from the Vancouver Police which included a national database search which I got notarized at the Canadian Embassy in Seoul. I also submitted my original diploma and transcripts to Immigration to get the visa issuance number.

When I renewed my visa last year, all I needed was 30,000won, a new contract and my school's registration papers.

My co-teacher called immigration today to confirm the case would be the same this time and they told her this time I NEEDED to submit a new CRC (verified by the Korean Consul in Vancouver) and a notarized copy of my degree (verified by the Korean Consul in Vancouver) All of this a tall order considering I am in Korea and know no one in Vancouver.

I called the Immigration hotline and they told me this wasn't the case as I was still on the same visa as long as my last criminal check was national in scope. My co-teacher then called again and was told I MIGHT need the new documents. But that even immigration wasn't sure.

Have any Canadian teachers renewed recently? What have you had to do to renew? Please advise! So confused! Have received three different answers all from the same immigration office and no idea what to do!

One of the joys of being an EFLer in Korea.

Good luck.

You will NOT get an accurate answer on the phone - full stop.

Go to immigration and apply; you will probably be fine with the standard renewal documents.

That said, last year (2011) WAS a gap year for those who didn't have current (national CBC and certified degree) documents on file time to get them.

If you used an original degree for your visa application or subsequent renewals you will need a K-consulate certified copy. It takes about 15 days to get done by mail.

The CBC should be fine. Immigration still continues to accept Canadian embassy certified CPIC CBCs.

Thanks ttompatz for the first rational sounding information I have received.

The diploma I submitted in 2010 was indeed the original, so perhaps I will need to get that stamped by the K-consul in Vancouver. Will check with them today and will mail off to Canada tomorrow.

The CRC I submitted ( I have a duplicate) states that it checked the National Criminal Repository of Canada. I will take it to Immi in person, show it to them AND ask if they have a scan on file.

I am iffy on taking my co-teacher's advice and trying to apply with the basic documents (no CRC or stamped diploma) 4 days before my visa expired as we did last time as I imagine it would leave me with no choice but to pack my bags. No chance Immi will grant a 1 month extension to get documents if they've been ordered and you are just waiting for them?

Actually, they would probably give you a 90 day extension to obtain new documents.
