...but I'm a little hesitant dealing with Koreans + my cat (no offense to any Koreans on here).
Be very choosy here with who you deal with.
I've got some vet horror stories here and my cat will probably never be the same after (long story short: I returned to find my cat hog tied around the legs with duct tape, and gauze taped around all her feet: for my 'safety'). It now hides in the closet 24/7 and runs if it sees anyone. It WAS a friendly, mellow cat before that.
Be careful. Tell them exactly what you want, and what you will and won't accept. Be direct, strong, and specific. In many cases, their ideas on kind and acceptable treatment for animals is 'different', so just blindly leaving it up to them might yield a few surprises. So, it's better to err on the side of caution. |

that's absolutely outrageous! I don't want to think what I might have done if someone - much less a vet - did that to my animal!!
to the OP: cats and dogs react very differently to drugs (i.e., aspirin can easily kill a cat), plus age and gender also makes a difference, so once you do find a reliable and trustworthy vet, if you decide to try this route, maybe you might want to try a dry run first and see how your cat reacts.
you might also think about asking an expat that's heading that way to accompany your feline friend. since you are planning well ahead of time, and so many folks do travel back and forth via planes these days, there's no reason to wait until the day you leave - you could then schedule the flight sooner, and know that everything was all right before you left. there are a LOT of expat animal lovers here, and I really think you'd be able to find someone that would be happy to do this if they were flying out anyway.
in the meantime, you might also try to find a small toy that your cat really likes - buy a new one even - and always have that in her/his container for comfort. something plush, even a small towel or blanket or pillow. it's the smell that will help keep the animal calm as it will be familiar, especially when traveling when an animal is being surrounded by all kinds of new and strange odors.
anyway, it's good you are preparing ahead and I hope it all works out - please keep us updated. |

My wife has used this company 3 times helping rescues got to Canada and The U.S. They helped us ship an Afghan Hound to Southern California, French Bulldog to Eastern Canada, and a second French Bulldog to NY State. All of the dogs have arrived safe and are in their in homes.
You will need someone to pick them up at the airport.
You can also use Chunghwa Vet in Seoul. Never used them but have heard good things.

Can I ask where you are travelling to with your pet? I will be taking my two cats back to England at the end of the year and am really unsure about how to do it. I've got the documentation, but not sure how to book the flights. Do you [b]have[b] to go through a pet travel company or can you just do it yourself? Do you have any idea on prices?
Thanks! |

| i had a sick dog once and my vet said to give him benadryl, too. But like others said, check with a vet first! medicine for people can work on animals and it can also kill them. definitely get some advice on that one! |

Thanks for all the advice and support!
I'm definitely going to check out those sites/vet. That's also a good idea about finding someone that is heading that way. Seoul>>Newfoundland, if anyone's interested! Toronto would be okay too, and then I can have a company to send him the rest of the way.
From my research, sending him unaccompanied is going to cost around $1,000. He's a full grown (okay, chubby) 6kg male cat, 2. 5 years, neutered. I have his blankey that he sleeps with every night, and was planning on cutting it in half (it's a regular-sized blanket), and send half of it home via post, so he has something non-urine soaked when he gets there. He also has Steve, his best friend stuffed bear.
I'm most concerned about the vet treatment, because when he was young and had to get his shots, the vet would come out with these huge gloves that covered the entire kitten, in order to stick him with needles. The cat wasn't impressed. I will definitely keep looking for someone to go with him . Thanks! |

Hi,
I've had my cat here in Korea for what will be 2.5 years (I got him as a kitten), and my time here is up in October. I'm travelling, so I'll have to send him home via an animal service. My dilemma is that while being a well-behaved and impeccably-trained cat (poops in the toilet!), he has an attitude and can be very picky, especially in new situations and environments. Where I'm living now is his 4th home in Korea, and each move became even more difficult.
He absolutely hates being locked in his carrier, to the point where he hurts himself (ripped out his claw last time). He sleeps in the carrier now, but if the door closes, he goes nuts. Howling, crying, shoving his face into the grate, etc. Even when I bring him up to our private roof and let him out of the carrier, he is still howling (for up to 2 hours!).
I'm worried about the 15+ hour flight home, if he'll even be allowed on the plane (due to his loud behavior), and how he'll adjust to being in a new country (and living with my in-laws). Also, this won't be the only flight, because once I do get home, I'll be moving to a new city, which will require a second flight for the cat.
I'm very concerned about leaving him here, because it'll need to be with a 'forever in Korea family', and those are usually Korean, who don't always like cats. I'm terrified of what will happen if I leave him here. It's not like leaving him with a cat-loving foreigner, because they will have the same situation when they want to go home.
I'm feeling very stuck and really not sure what to do. Any thoughts? |
You should eat him. |

I recommend The First Class Pet. I've contacted other ones recommended on this thread and found them to be unhelpful.

There is a limit at which dogs should not travel on a plane. I think if the temperature is over 27 C in the destination city, airlines won`t accept dogs.
So it does look like United is in the wrong.
So in San Francisco the weather was good, but in Texas it was too hot to fly to. |
