Yeah, not looking to make any money here.
Specifically, I'd like to know have any of YOU actually reported someone?
If so, can you do it without giving a name? We have many mutual acquaintances and I'd rather be in a position where my name comes out somehow and I get burned? I'd also like to avoid turning this person in and having immigration say "gee, why don't we check out the gal who turned this person in? Maybe SHE'S into ... too! |
The branch of immigration that deals with this seems to be very incompetent or lazy. If they get a tip off, they investigate everyone at the hogwon at the same time. If you aren't doing anything illegal, then nothing comes of it and they move along. (From my experience, an officer comes to the school and asks to see your passport, gives it back and says "Thanks. Sorry for disturbing you.") They aren't going to set up a stake out in front of your apartment building or go through your garbage (although some private citizens not only do so but also encourage other citizens to try to dig up dirt on foreigners). If you ARE doing something that you shouldn't be doing, don't rat out your co-worker. If it's just a friend of a friend and there's no real connection to you, then you could probably just ask a Korean friend to report the person. If you're doing something illegal, then it's probably best if you DON'T get involved yourself. Unless you're reporting something serious, I don't think they'll investigate an anonymous tip. You or someone else WILL have to go on record.
I don't know what the reward is, but I don't think that you'd make much for reporting a single crime. Slothrop said it's 5 million for reporting hogwons. That seems a bit high. I presume that's the maximum. If it really is 5 mil then I think that I just found a new hobby. Forget about working overtime, I'm going to be spending my evenings cruising the town looking for after-hours hogwons to rat out. It's not lot like there's any shortage of dishonest hogwon owners. But I suspect that if the reward really was that much, you see the students themselves turning in the hogwons, if for nothing else than to avoid having to attend class until midnight. |

Yeah - you're Korean. It's so obvious from the nonsense you post and the way you write. Move along sunshine, nothing to see here except the reflection bouncing back on you of the rather poor image of Koreans as xenophobic and money grubbing when they do this kind of slimey behaviour.
As for Troglydyte - Immigration sounds neither 'lazy' nor 'incompetent' here. If they check a hagwon at one time, ask for passports and then leave that's a strength, not a weakness. These days more educated people work at Immigration and it's good to know at least some of them have better things to be doing than listening to nasty little xenophobic Koreans so desperate for money that they stoop so low as to take pictures of people because they are foreigners.
This is the kind of activity that encourages disrespect for Korea and Koreans - not the opposite. I'll remind you that this despicable spying extends to making foreigners feel uncomfortable for having Korean friends and hanging out with them or hanging out with students. It's so backwards and nothing to encourage. |

You are a very sad person. Absolutely pathetic. How about making money through skills? Oh sorry, you have none which is why you write this drivel and proudly declare yourself a snitch as if you live in North Korea. Are you one of the insecure gypos around the place? |

I have points to make about issues affecting foreign English teachers, not trolling around unlike you.
From the evidence of your own mouth or rather hand on another thread, you've said you are over 45 years old. I gather living in the student dorm on your campus is right up the alley of your immature attitude.
I see why you're still here - you have no life so you troll instead. Each to their own.

You must be feeling very lonely in that student dorm at your uni. An immature over-45 foreigner like you must cut a very sad figure. I almost feel sorry for you. |

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that they don't harass people. Still, I don't think they do a very good job of catching illegal immigrants. I get the feeling that when they do crack down, it's more for show than anything else. I think that it's like in the States where they unofficially let the illegal immigrants go about their business until they need to make a show that they're worth our tax dollar, or when the illegal population just gets to be too big.
This isn't just in the ELT industry. As much as some people may think otherwise, illegal English teachers are a relatively low priority on their list. They're more interested in catching illegal immigrants/workers doing 3D jobs. (Plus, when they raid a factory they can usually catch a bunch of people at the same time.)
Anyone who's been here a few years will know at least a couple people teaching on a tourist visa, and a bunch more that are doing extra work at a hogwon or private classes that are just as illegal, but how often do we hear about an acquaintance getting caught? I remember a couple years ago, there was even an example in the newspaper where the immigration guys went to a school and asked to speak to the foreign teacher. The secretary brought him to the officers and the teacher and the owner of the school swore that the guy wasn't actually teaching. He was just there to visit his friend the owner and to enjoy some cookies and kimbab. Since the officer hadn't even gone to the classroom to see what the foreigner was doing they could stick anything to him.
I think that they do about as good a job of catching illegal workers as the guys patrolling the USA-Mexican border do.
Hmmm.... I wonder if I could become a sort of ELT coyote. Ya. I'll bet no one's ever thought of that. I could probably corner the market in illegal English teacher smuggling. Maybe even the occasional French of Spanish teacher. |

I've never felt uncomfortable for having Korean friends and hanging out with them. And unless your students are adults you shouldn't be "hanging out" with them. In fact I wouldn't hang out with any students...that tends to carry over into and blur the boundaries in the classroom...but to each his own.
And there are a number of foreigners who spend time with their Korean friends and neither they nor the Koreans appear uncomfortable at all. You really had to scrap the bottom of the barrel to come up with this one, didn't you?
Yes there are a few xenophobic Koreans...so what? Ignore them. |

Nope, not korean, but thanks for playing.
Anyway, found out it's not an immigration issue, so I just reported it to the police. Just time to wait and see if anything comes of it. |

One of my Korean friends said "paparazzi" would come around to his school after 10 pm and take photos. He wanted me to work there after getting off at my full-time job, but I turned it down since it would be illegal for me to work any second job, especially an after 10 job with people making an effort to cause trouble.
What's the rate for snitching on a brothel? |
