I don't really understand this.

If these batteries are indeed dangerous, why are they only banning them from international shipments and not banning them entirely? Apparently it's no big deal if they catch fire in America?

The article also blames lithium batteries for two cargo plane crashes. Again, if these batteries are so dangerous then why are they OK on passenger flights? With mobile phones, laptops, ipads, cameras, etc there must be hundreds if not thousands of lithium batteries on the average passenger flight.

Why does it seem like there some strand connecting it to the new FTAs recently. Like, the States are renown for being relatively inexpensive w/r/t electronics and I'm figuring that places like Korea'd like to protect their markets.. I know, because I've shipped from repeatedly. There seems to be something I'm missing though. I might have to look in deeper...Or I'm just being paranoid. Hm.

Although common sense says it will, they don't know whether or not the ban will apply to shipment to the US. (but then this ban itself doesn't stand the common test)

Case in point, Amazon's recently suspended all vendors (well, at least all vendors of the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0) who offer international shipping for US-priced goods for 48 hours since yesterday.(ie until the ban goes into effect.) This is obnoxious to say the least.

So expats and travelers are screwed or relegated to high priced shipments (eg FedEx) to make food on warantees?

I think I understand what you're saying...but

-shipment on boat v. air can put a lot of people off, due to things like time, environment, etc.
- if, as 2nd poster said, concern over passenger safety is the case, then why does USPS allow intra-national shipment of lithium-battery gadgets via passenger plane?

Are any other national carriers going the same route, I wonder?

First, they don't ship by air on commercial passenger flights. If I recall, the flights that crashed were simply cargo flights. Banning these things on cargo flights makes some sense - a Boeing 7xx goes down, that's millions of dollars gone, whereas a semi-trailer or panel truck goes up, it's maybe 40 or 50k. Also, a crashing plane is a bit more difficult to escape from than a burning truck.

Second, if you read the fine print, packing these batteries into checked baggage on a passenger flight has been against the rules for some time. It's not enforced particularly well, but it is against the rules. If a fire starts in the cabin, people can see it and put it out. In the hold = game over.

I don't think it's anything nefarious. I think that they are probably doing different tests to see what causes these things to start a fire and when they have a determination, a more permanent decision will be made.
