|

Hi all -
I am currently an ESL Instructor at an international school in Boston, MA, and I'd like to go abroad this coming September to teach in (preferably) South Korea. I would without a doubt, though, consider options from other counties in Asia depending on the details of the potential job. I am considering graduate school in the States for 2013, and so I am having some difficulty finding shorter-term contracts.
Ideally I would like to teach somewhere in or around Seoul, but again, I am still flexible. In Boston I typically teach university-aged students, but would be open to teaching almost any age.
Any help that you could give me as to specific recruitment agencies, schools in particular, people to talk to, or actual opportunities you have for SHORT-TERM contracts would be greatly appreciated! Something along the lines of September 2012 - February 2013 would be perfect, but please pass along any information.
Thanks in advance!

There's a kind of English village in the Bundang area (close to Seoul proper) that hires people for short term work. I can't recall the name of the place but maybe someone else here will.
It sounds like a decent enough place, used to have a bit of an eco-theme. Downside is teachers have to share rooms. (Literally rooms as far as I remember.) |

I don't think that you'll seem many opportunities posted. The standard offer if for 1 year.
That said, if you make contact with the schools (possibly the recruiters) then you can negotiate something. Many hogwons owners can be negotiated with. It just depends on what you're willing to give up in exchange for a shorter contract. If you look over the job offers, you'll see that the salaries and benefits are all about the same. If you're willing to pass on the airfare or housing or pay half of the rent or receive a lower salary, then you can probably negotiate something. There are a lot of small schools that would like to hire a foreigner but don't know if it's the right solution, so if you present them with a cheaper solution and fewer obligations one of them is sure to agree to it. |

I don't know the English village that you're referring to, but a lot of people I know who've worked at English villages didn't like it for various reasons. Still, it's probably a matter of individual personality because I've met people who loved it. |

The academic school year starts in March, takes a break in late July and returns from late August through December.
Unless you are in the country your chances of finding a short term job are slim to none (you won't cover your travel expenses and no-one will pay the flight for less than a 1-year contract).
ADD to that the simple fact that in the US it takes MONTHS to get your documentation in order means that unless you have already begun the process of collecting the necessary paperwork and having it legalized for international use (apostilles) you are unlikely to be ready to even apply for a work visa in time to start in Sept.
Try China. Wages aren't as good but their academic terms are more in sync with the US and they do offer short term contracts.
If you are willing to fly and try on your own dime there is always Vietnam and/or Thailand (but again you won't likely make enough in a short term job to even cover airfare to Asia).

I totally agree. This place didn't seem like the usual show pony thing, which is why I suggested it. |

Thanks for the tip, I'll add a line about being negotiable to the standard email I'm sending to recruitment agencies. |

I should be getting my FBI check back any day now, so it's not too far off from being apostilled yet. I think I should be alright visa-wise, but I will definitely take a look into China. |
