"Here are some pictures of school lunches from around the world. Korea clearly wins this one (Japan would have if it wasn't for that spaghetti)."

IMHO, I wouldn't say "clearly." I don't see anything wrong with the spaghetti from Japan. Looks decent. France looked pretty good as well and I have a nostalgic desire for that big piece of fried chicken and mashed potatoes meal from the U.S. The Asian countries as a whole looked the best. The African ones looked quite sad. |

Wow, I forgot just how bad US school lunches were. It's amazing that that crap still flies. |

I am so glad I went to a prep school for high school and had some incredible food. I can't believe I survived for eight years on food from Aramark, the company famous for providing food to public schools and prisons. |

Dunno, Slovakia, France, and Italy looked like they served decent fare. I'd rather eat that than Korean school lunch. |

Is this just to show how bad USA and UK's lunches are? They are really bad but these photos aren't showing the complete truth and are possibly from schools in nicer areas.
At the school I work, these are also in the monthly rotation:
Spaghetti with meat sauce (like Japan's picture)
Fried Chicken
Curry
Pizza
Hot dogs
Hamburgers
From the photos alone, I would personally pick France's lunches (love couscous). Last choice, USA's. Only three items from all their lunches were "healthy" but can't tell if they are smothered in butter/salt. |

I can only assume that bigass plate of french fries in the first picture did France in. However, I would gladly eat everything in France's second picture. |

Yeah, I wouldn't have eaten all of the fries, but the rest of the food looked really good. Strangely enough, Slovakia's food looked the best, but it was mainly fresh veg and fish, which I love. |

IMHO Korean food is generally less appetizing-looking than most other cuisines. And the metal meal trays just ruin everything. |

It's funny, because that plate of mussels and fries would run you close to twenty bucks in a lot of restaurants. |

I don't mind the metal trays. It's all the styrofoam ones the U.S. uses that are upsetting. |

Another thing I found interesting was that the U.S. was the only one using single use styrofoam trays and plastic utensils.

That too. It's not the metal so much as the stupid trays with the slots for food. Not only are they not very versatile (unitaskers only capable of serving Korean food, and not even that-try serving bibimbap on one of those) but the presentation just isn't that pleasing. I prefer the paper or china plate on a tray setup. |

Not "won", maybe par for the course. Like others said: France, Sweden, Italy, Slovakia all looked like better lunches to me. |

Indeed! I would only avoid the fries because I'm particularly short, and I'd gain weight almost instantly from eating that many. Maybe a third of them would be okay. I used to love going for mussels and fries at this one Belgian place every few months, and it was easily over $20 per person, not counting the wine.
Still, fish and fresh vegetables would be preferable if served on a daily basis, so I'm going to vote for Slovakia.
EDIT: Looking at Sweden's fare, I'd go for that on a regular basis as well. I hadn't really examined it, so it looked like a meat dish, but I see now that they are beans. Yum!
EDIT 2: Maybe not in elementary school, but my high school had a salad bar, on top of the regular meh food. On days that I didn't pack my own lunch, I loved that salad bar. Oh, how I miss customizable salads. The only ones I've found here (outside of home) are at Subway, which I guess is okay, but not great.

I went to public schools in a few states in the US and the food generally was pretty good. There were the odd things that I did complain about, but mostly because I didn't particularly like that item, not because it was poorly prepared or unhealthy. |
