Hi,

Some woman keeps coming to my apartment claiming to own other rooms in the building (but not mine), and insisting that I pay 15,000won to have the septic tank cleaned. If I don't, there will be a 1M fine.

Has anyone else heard of this? In my 4 years here, I haven't heard of this fee. She was quick to show me ID, but still, her name isn't on my rental contract and I don't generally give money to strange ajummas.

What kind of a building do you live in? Is it smal and older? Since the units are separately owned, it is some kind of condo building and not an apartment building. Is there a management company?

If this housing was provided by your employer, you should check with them first. They have either rented this unit from a private owner or it is owned by the school. They should be able to check with this woman and find out the story. If your building has a septic tank, then cleaning it out is part of the utilities that teachers normally have to pay.

Thanks. I rent it myself, and it's a building with about 6 rooms.

If this is common, then I don't mind paying...I just didn't want to get scammed. :)

I mean, I don't deny my ability to produce large amounts of the proverbial, but, do I even HAVE a septic tank? I live in HBC! Aren't I connected to the main shitpipe? Wherever it goes?

There are cheaper options:

1. Use a bucket.

2. Use your neighbors can.

3. Or just tell everyone to F off and hang your butt out the window.

I'm pretty sure all of HBC uses septic tanks. Look outside around your building, you should see an ovalish shaped rubber lid thats about 2 feet in length. their pretty easy to find outside all houses/buildings there. That's where all the magic is stored.

Standard villa utility cost.

I'm not sure its a true septic tank, maybe some kind of holding tank, but its something that needs cleaning out periodically.

Cleaning septic tanks once per year is Korean law. In an apartment building everyone pays. Yesterday, I received my annual notice.

My a**hole neighbors had theirs cleaned out right under my open window at 5:30 in the morning yesterday. Great way to wake up. I should have asked them how much they paid after I told them to go F themselves.

Or just go in the stairwell. Blame it on the neighbor's dog.

If you have CCTV in your building, then you might have to go find some bushes in a nearby park.

Just think of how much money you'll save on your water bill!
