Saverin was an American who benefited immensely from doing business in America. It was American government efforts that developed the platform for his business (the internet). Facebook is/was an American company, benefiting from incorporated status (limited liability, a protection afforded by American law). American laws also protect Facebook's intellectual property, trademarks, etc. Facebook's creators and employees are largely products of the American higher education system, and Facebook itself became popular in the environment of American universities.

The American government didn't cut Saverin and co. a big check to get them started, but to say that Facebook (and Saverin) didn't benefit from America is ridiculous. You sure as hell don't see Facebooks, Googles, Ebays, and Amazons popping up out of Singapore or the Caymens (that's just where the execs go when it's time to pay it forward!).

The whole thing sounds suspiciously like the Berlin Wall part 2...

Indeed, dark hilarity.

I "had the right" to be hurled up against a police car and tossed into cuffs for expired tabs while my woman screamed "what the hell are you doing to my hubby!!!". Police in Korea don't treat people like that, she had no idea what was happening. I also had no idea what was happening. They wouldn't tell me anything and kept interrogating me in the back seat of the police car while the other one was talking to my woman.

Here's the thing, I'm white collar and make good money yet at that time I drove a beat up car and dressed in jeans. That's important to this story because it's the USA; they love to harass people who can't defend themselves. Outside the car the trooper asks my woman what she does...she's got sense and replies "I'm a doctor", she told me later after this whole event the guy immediately backed up, got this fearful look on his face and changed his entire strategy.

The two guys exchange some hushed words I'm asked what I do "venture capital, and by the way would you guys take these cuffs off, I work over in that building and it would be great if my boss didn't see this entire affair".

Only now out of fear there would be calls from my attorney to the police chief did they remove the cuffs and finally reveal...it's all because of some expired tabs! Gone is the belligerent style and they are doing their best to act like human beings.

At least I wasn't tazed, but I bet you if I had a hippy T-shirt on I would have been. A bunch of spineless creeps. Downtown where I lived these cops were too chicken to go up against the armed crack heads, but yeah let's go mess with some guy and his woman driving home from work minding their own business.

That weekend we went camping in the middle of nowhere to get away from it all. Armed forest rangers stormed our camp at midnight scaring the hell out of my woman for the second time in one week (sigh), up against the car again, with headlights in our eyes, searched all our bags, more belligerence and abuse of power.

That was it for me. This kind of stuff is what you "have the right to" in day to day American life. That place is more or less a police state these days. Edwardo +1.

Sure I understand what you are saying, but this is an American value; to value money above all else. In the USA Eduardo "had the right" to be betrayed by his friends over money. Because in the USA money is greater than friends/family. People say "well he's a billionaire so he can't complain" but that only demonstrates their values.

Maybe he doesn't want to be a part of it anymore? But of course, it must be tax reasons. The danger is when anyone wants to get over the Berlin Wall Part 2 it will of course be labeled tax reasons, you can't prove otherwise.

What would be these wonderful "rights" of which you speak?

Living in the country, enjoying it's infrastructure, police and military protection for which other people are paying tax dollars are two very obvious ones that yourself, as an 'American Caucasian' should be aware of.

Oh, so people should be "grateful" to have to pay for a protection racket? Interesting. I'll be sure to keep that in mind the next time the local mafia don sends his goons out on collection rounds, and come knocking on my door...

Value money all you friggin' want, but pay your fair share like most people do. America certainly has its fair share of problems, including police brutality and some really awful drug laws, but here's the kicker: guys like Saverin are and were never touched by any of that. So stop trying to paint the US as some totalitarian state (Berlin Wall 2, seriously?) when the ONLY issue at hand is a mega-wealthy guy dodging a modest tax rate. Oh no, poor fella. Don't see me crying and trying to offshore when I have to pay taxes (to either the US or K gov).

In another topic all of you Libertarian types will be complaining about the national debt and being sold out to China and all that, so how about we start raising some revenue along with cutting military spending and ending failed policies (war on drugs, etc etc)?
