Hi,

First post and already I am onto my troubles. Anyway, I have an interview with EPIK coming up, and I already spotted two issues that may be a problem.

First, I applied twice:
- once with the Korean Embassy here, but there was no response.
- then with EPIK directly.

Should I mention this to the interviewer, especially if they ask if I applied somewhere else?

Secondly, there is a slight mistake in my application, which I just realised. Would it be prudent to point it out and mention it? Also, its a bit of information that will come out later anyway...

(On a different note: is it true that schools in Korea prefers American teachers to British ones?) Surprised

There are loads of non-North Americans teaching in public schools. I wouldn't worry about it.

You might have to tell us what you left out of the CV if you want advice on whether to mention it

I didn't leave out any information from the application. I made a mistake about the points I got on my degree because here in the UK we have a different grading system. I had to convert honours to GPA. Its very slight, but it is still incorrect.

Think of the military term, "need to know".

Do they need to know about it? No.

What good could come of them knowing about it? Nothing.

Do not mention anything negative at your interview. If these were a problem they would not have selected you for an interview in the first place. They will not ask about these so don't say anything negative on your interview. If they sniff out any problems you will get a red pen through your name. These interviewers are not there to be reasonable.

Some of them are lazy, or their English is not good enough to understand any explanation. So all they hear is "mistake", blah blah blah.

GPA doesn't matter anyways and no transcripts are required anymore. That part is just another dumb step and works on the honor system.

Anytime I see a new thread with "Should I mention ...?", I always want to shout "No, no, a thousand times NO!" before even reading the OP.

No, one should not mention previous bouts of now extinct depressive episodes. No, one should not mention an in-grown toenail. No, one should not mention a below average GPA.

Real or imagined shortcomings? Up to each individual. But don't shoot yourself in the foot with "over-honesty" over trivial things that will not matter in the great scheme of things. Mentioning every little blemish is not going to do you any good and will probably hurt you in the long run.

That said, Korea does not need criminals on the run, pedophiles, hardened alcoholics, weirdos, nutters, social misfits or slackers. It already has enough of those.

Just be honest and moral. But be honest and moral wisely.

Care for yourself first then these come after. The recruiters could care a less about you. How moral is that? You have to care for yourself.

I would NOT mention this. Don't mention where you've previously applied. This is not professional and it may seem as though no one else wants to hire you.

It depends on what the mistake is. If it is something big or important, then yes. But if it is something minor, then no.

It depends upon the school. You will face this bias at times but not all principals have this opinion.
