Has anyone here seen pieces of real leather for sale?
I mean genuine leather for projects and NOT the kind of "leather" you see on rolls which is synthetic (I've seen this in Dongdemun area).
Thanks for any sightings! |

There is a place or three like that in the Chungyechon/Emart area just South of that river and near Sinseoldong station. They sell some leather, belt buckles, and various similar snaps and whatnot. It's hard to describe where to go, but if you leave that Chungyechon E-mart and cross the street over the river, you'll pass a really old/ugly building selling used Army crap. Keep going past the BYC underwear store. There should be some shops around there just past that store, as well as some in random alleys for a few blocks behind that store. That's the general area, anyway. |

Swampfox,
Thanks so much for responding.
So I basically go to the Sinseoldong station, exit and look around for the Emart. Then look for a river and head over the street, pass it and go toward the stores mentioned above?
Again, I appreciate the idea. It sounds like the right type of environment for what I'm looking for....
I'll post here if others are interested.

I walked by that area and everything was closed (7pm) that time of evening. I couldn't be sure, but it mostly appeared to be clothing/textile shops selling materials.
If you go to Sinseoldong station, then head South toward the river. One of the tallest apartment complexes in the area has an Emart at the base. Follow my directions from that E-mart and you'll be heading back toward Sinseoldong.
I hope I don't disappoint you. BTW, if you find leather shops, please let me know. I'm curious what it would cost to make a quality 2-ply belt here. |

Sinseoul-dong report.
First of all, thanks for pointing me in the direction of Sinseoul-dong. It was an interesting neighborhood in general and had a gritty real feel that was kind of refreshing to me in a weird way.
As you suggested, if you turn immediately left after the YBC store you can go down a central street and many, many side streets with various belt buckles, snaps etc. Unfortunately, for my use, 99.9% of what's there are synthetic rolls of fabric or leather that's quite thin.
There are two places though that may work for you or be misses - I'm not sure.
#1 If you turn left after the YBC store and go up the central street 1 or 2 blocks (sorry, it got a little confusing!) and turn left, go about 1/2 a block and on your left will be a seller with leather that's not on a roll - dyed whole pieces of presumably cow leather. big cutting table in the center of the store. You might get a piece of there that will work for you.
#2 If you go to the YBC store and don't turn left and keep walking just a bit more there's a store on your left set back from the sdiewalk that sells pieces of real leather. This guy was quite a bit friendlier than the women selling out of #1 store who frankly, I didn't like.
A guy unloading trucks of leather tried to help me. He spoke a bit of English. Thicker cowhide leather, shoulder etc..is a special import item and it's not available off the shelf in many cases even from the only two stores who might carry it. 99.9% from a vat of chemicals in China I imagine. Also, be prepared to buy a whole piece of the dyed leather from the two stores mentioned - I'm guessing 80-100K Won a piece. I only need two sole sized pieces.
Minor rant that will be of no interest to any here but the weirdest of Dave's board. I've often walked around markets and industrial clusters in Latin America and Eastern Europe. The clusters are formed for efficiency reasons - proximity to all of the little goods and services that make up an industry. I've always seen people working on stuff in those industries near the supplies. Not here. It seems really strange to me the way it's set up. There are tons of "post production" materials. Little buttons, clips suede etc but not any real craftsmanship going on. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the China factories pumping out tons of cheap products which dominate here (and a lot of other places obviously). Understandable yet depressing in some way.
Post if you have any questions of course.

except for like traditional pottery, Ive never seen real craftsmanship here in most things, just its made and its sold. The public doesnt know about that yet.I got to J+++N for my fine leather goods (I just got a hand made wallet with solid leather from a company in Fukuoka for 130000won or so. Lovely, I love to just look at it.)

Nice. Japanese craftsmanship was always something to admire. I lived there in the 80's for a year. Great woodwork, architecture, block printing etc.. Yeah, the district for leather was really a giant fabric store. I'm guessing there were some people who could tailor but I didn't even see that despite how huge the district is. |

My husband has done some leather crafting in the past. He always bought his supplies on the internet. Mostly on Gmarket I think. There are quite a few Koreans who do this as a hobby and plenty of forums and internet groups with meet ups and all that. |
