When we first arrive in Korea, we are required to do a health check as part of the contract.

However, if you renew for another year at your school do you need to do another health check? If so, who would be responsible for the payment - me or the school?

Yes, you need another one. Usually you would be responsible for the cost, however, if you play dumb you may get lucky and have your school pay for it.

Beg to differ. I've renewed with the same workplace numerous times & have never been required by immi to provide a new health check.

My school (public) on the other hand requires a check every second year, same as all the K-teachers. Which is free to me.

My PS is like schwa's, but I know a teacher in another jurisdiction and he must do the same drug test/HIV tests as required at joining.

If lucky when you go to renew the immigration official might not ask for it. Still overall expect to get one done. It might be immigration asking or it could be MOE or even your public school could ask for insurance reasons.

As to who pays, what is in the contract? For some places they will pay for any visa costs - visa fee, medical. Sometimes they will just pay for visa trip ferry/plane ticket and hotel. The best thing to do is ask. Another detail to ask check on is if you do it, you need a morning or afternoon off. So no gruff from staff about missing some work and threats of taking holiday away.

I have paid for my own in the past. Took a bite out the wallet but it was done.

A side point a school asking for a health check once a year is not unreasonable. Health checks are not static. People get sick, people travel to Thailand and smoke dope. Asking for a CRC (if not been back home) or verified degree AGAIN is unreasonable.

I have had to renew every year. Sometimes the school pays for it and sometimes I have to. And sometimes the health card covers it. It is quite variable.
