|
|
"SEOUL, South Korea South Korea plans to chemically castrate a sex offender convicted of repeated crimes against children, the country's first use of the punishment, officials said Thursday.
The 45-year-old man will get an injection Friday that lowers testosterone-suppressing hormones and aims to inhibit sexual impulses, Justice Ministry officials said on condition of anonymity citing department rules.
South Korea passed a law in 2010 allowing judges or a Justice Ministry panel the option of ordering chemical castration after a series of violent sexual assaults on children sparked public outrage.
The man to be castrated this week was convicted four times between 1984 and 2002 of raping or sexually molesting girls under the ages of 13, the ministry said in a separate statement. A psychiatric test has concluded the man is a pedophile and needs medication, the officials said."

This is good news but how is it that someone who has been convicted four times of child rape keeps getting out of prison to victimize more children? |

Neither the man himself nor the plan is good news. It's merely pandering to bloodlust of the public. |

As a blood thirsty bastard who'd like to bash in the domes of pedophiles, I had mixed feelings when I heard about this. As with the death penalty, I don't think the government should have the power to castrate someone. It goes without saying they should be pretty damn sure they got the right guy before doing this. Not that I'm an expert, child molestation doesn't always seem to be motivated by sexual urges anyway. Instead of permanently castrating a guy, they should've give them longer sentences in the first place.

The four times he raped children didn't give them enough clues? |

It's chemical castration.

They needed a psychiatric test to conclude that he was a pedophile? |

I think its a legal technicality. Something about it being a medical condition or whathaveyou and they need an official diagnosis. I know, its dumb, but that's the wonderful world of bureaucracy.
Not like the old days where you could just get it over with and string Billy the Molester up. But then again these days Random Black Guy isn't getting strung up in the crossfire...well..sort of.... |

Chemical castration. Not an actual operation. |

that's not true at all. chemical castration has been around for a couple of decades; many sexual offenders have actually preferred it and say it's all that keeps them from re-offending. it also provides them the option to get out of prison, which as mentioned in the article, is part of the deal this individual made.
it really does no good to just lock up such individuals if no attempts to stop their activity aren't made. sexual predators have unique challenges that need to be addressed in order to protect society from their actions, especially since all too often murder can and does become part of this when out of desperation (or for other reasons), they kill the victim(s). |

And, as I understand it, generally reversible. But yeah, I've also read that some offenders prefer it. |

Maybe it is just me...but...anyone who repeatedly rapes children should never get out of prison...ever.
There should be no 'deals' made.
They should be left in prison for the rest of their lives with nothing but time to agonize over the absolutely fucking horrendous acts they have committed and the harm they have caused others.
"sexual predators have unique challenges" (so very PC)
These "unique challenges" should be extremely limited...die of old age in prison...gang raped and beaten to death by fellow inmates...or euthanasia.
Euthanasia should be allowed, by the offenders choice, after a period of say 10 years.
Seriously...4 times...and they are letting this sick pedo back out.
Truly disgusting. |

No need to bash in the domes of anybody, just keep them tucked away from children.
How do you know for sure what's in store for your personality development and make up? Not that you would be a pedophile in the future. |

Capital Punishment for Child Molesters is revolting? If some guy gets caught the act of doing a 6 year old...if people want to hang em by a tree, fine.
At the same time the comment wasn't meant in total seriousness and meant to convey the idea that instead of just stringing people up (and incidentally having minorities caught in the crossfire), you actually have to get things like a medical diagnosis and such. |

Capital punishment for anyone, for any reason, is revolting to many people. Effective incarceration is the way to keep criminals away. And that can be done without killing people.
And the idea that a vigilante murder is fine is also revolting. |

no, I am not being politically correct in what I stated - I hate, abhor, sexual predators as much as you do. however, in this day and age we treat everything from baldness to infertility to cancer with the most modern techniques possible - sexual predation is no exception. it's a little understood malady that causes a great deal of harm to society - are you saying something so terrible should just be dealt with by locking people away and no attempt at treatment ever?
further, there are people who actually do not offend but seek treatment because they do understand how wrong these feelings are - what then? are you going to imprison someone who only thinks about molesting children but hasn't yet and has actually sought help? wouldn't a just society try to treat such an individual?
labeling something with the "yuck" factor because it's too unpleasant to deal with does no one any good - especially victims past and potentially future.
chemical castration is also part of an attempt to understand the hormonal unbalance that contributes to both a man's desire as well as actions towards molestation. because women bear children, much more is known about their hormonal cycles than men. it could very well be that by funding the proper research in men's reproductive cycles, the day could come when all boys/young men could be screened by a simple blood test that measured their hormones for levels which could predict problems in the future and therefore be corrected by oral doses of the proper hormone, much as some women take birth control pills to balance a heavy flow, whether or not they are sexually active.
personally, I have absolutely not an ounce (or gram) of compassion for a convicted child molester and could care less about their own well-being - I do, however, support and commend those who do work with them in attempts to find the solution to this horrific and devasting activity. |
