Cleaning septic tanks once per year is Korean law. In an apartment building everyone pays. Yesterday, I received my annual notice.

Now imagine what had to take place (or not take place) for them to enact the 1 year law?

True story...

Ten years ago, I decided to be adventurous and attempt to bake some cookies in one of those little toaster ovens (real western-style cookies were harder to come by, and I wouldn't have known where to begin to look if there were any). I bought all of the ingredients at the local store, but couldn't figure out what sugar was.

Now I would have just asked, but I already had one bad experience the week prior where two doumi girls ran off through the store screaming because I tried to ask them where the vinegar was. To put it mildly, I was embarrassed.

So I lumbered through the aisles and managed to find the spices. In a small plastic package, I found something called "near sugar" and decided that was close enough (those of you who bake will immediately know what is going to happen here).

I went home and mixed the cookies per my mother's notes from the internet. I tasted some of the dough first, and the taste was HORRIBLE! I immediately knew I'd done something wrong. So what did I do? I threw the entire batch down the sink, which is what one could do back home, given that we have an actual sewage system with a line to a sewage plant far away (still not a good idea to do, though).

To make a long story short, cookie dough is made with eggs. Within a week, all of the drains stunk to high-heaven. I'm sure the entire place had stinky drains.

And sure enough, they sent the truck out to clean out the septic tank soon after!
