Here's their website:

http://eng.expo2012.kr/main.html?mobile_at=Y

Starts May 12th.

Can be reachable by all modes of transportation here in Korea as they built a new airport and railline especially for the event.

Post photos and experiences here. I'd personally want to avoid visiting this during the monsoon season of July and beginning of Aug.

The Yeosu edition will have the unenviable distinction of following the most successful Expo in history that was in Shanghai.

I don't see the point of it. The pavillions are cool to look at but they're just visual displays really. I don't understand why people would travel to see this, nor how anybody is making money from it. I thought it would be a sort of business fair for investors. Unless the important stuff is going on behind closed doors I see no reason at all for somebody to travel from a different country to see this. I'm completely nonplussed by the whole thing, but I'll go back at some point anyway

I agree. Here's a schedule of the events:
http://eng.expo2012.kr/is/ps/unitybbs/bbs/selectBbsDetail.html?ispsBbsId=BBS026&ispsNttId=0000000046

Notable to me was the absence of several highly populated nations that ought to have an interest in 'The Living Ocean and Coast': Canada, Brazil, the UK to name but a few.. many other large countries are not featured in the schedule. Mongolia will be featured at the expo but Mongolia is landlocked. These are some days I think might be days worth going down there for (they are all weekend days):

May 20th: Indonesia*
May 27th: Australia**
June 2nd: Japan***
June 10th: Belgium*
July 14th: France**

***would definitely be interested in seeing that
**would be interested in seeing that
*if I have nothing better to do, I might go see that.

Many of the countries who's exhibits are probably worth seeing are on weekdays.

The weekend of June 2nd. would be the best time to go imo. I'm sure it would be a nice day out regardless, as there will be a cool water desalination observation room and a massive aquarium, but these are nothing new. It's really just a showpiece for Korea's construction industry / infrastructure more than anything else afaik. I see it as being like Yeongam F1 track and Songdo city that way.

I couldn't exactly gather all, but one of my students who went down for opening weekend mentioned that since they were so busy with the V.I.P's and the general opening hub-bub of the event that officials were restricting entrance to some of the exhibits to 2 guests per household or something like that.

Can anyone confirm this?

It's no problem to get tickets at the gate.

I was impressed with some of the pavilions. Overall, I think they did a good job. The nation and corporation pavilions were a bit disappointing.

I liked: Korean pavilion, Theme Pavilion, Aqua city, German, Russian, Swiss pavilion segments, Big O nighttime event (starts @ 9:30 - get there early if you go.Very good). SK telecom and DSME pavilions were good corp pavilions but not very marine themed. If you saw those things alone, that's doing well in one day given the countless other distractions and queues. All food I had there was excellent.

If you could go on a weekday (no Korean holiday) it would be perfect.

It's mainly for kids.

I stayed in a nearby city called Suncheon ( 순천 ). It's about 45 minutes away by bus. If you get off at the intercity bus terminal and cross the main road there you will find lots of hotels / motels. Look for a place called 'Samoa' (easy to find). Across the road from Samoa is 'Isabella' which has rooms at 30,000 won. That's the best I could find. Room was ok with internet and old style AC which shouldn't matter at night as it's still cool enough. Get your ticket for Suncheon and your ticket back home when you arrive if not before. I did not check the prices of hotels or motels in Yeosu.

Hotels are probably double price in Yeosu. Government is trying to clamp down on hotels who rip off people for the Expo.

On another board, I texted about taking a KTX, regular train, or bus to a neighboring coastal city such as Jinju (90min. east) or Masan/Changwon (120min. east).

Not sure what's west of there.

Changwon has more foreign restaurants and waygook friendly bars near the central E-mart.

Masan around the express bus terminal is not too bad.

Could even take KTX back up to Daejon for the night if there were no motels, jimjilbangs or hostels.

You aren't suggesting people stay in Changwon or Jinju for an Expo visit, surely? Suncheon and Gwangyang are the nearest significant places to Yeosu. Staying any further than that and you'd be better off just paying the mark up price for a hotel

If you do go, be sure to stay around for the night show that starts up about 9:20 or so. Here is a clip of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0EhRpYThZM

I'd go back to see that again. It's really beautiful, and you may see more detail than any camera can. Some of the effects are a problem for auto-focus.

Do the concession stands in each of the national pavilions have electronic charge systems set up to take plastic or do we need to take cash with us?

How are the ATMs at the site?

Any locker storage available?

(Hopefully this will get answered before next weekend.)
